The Official #15 Tennessee vs. Tennessee Tech Game Thread, 3:00 PM ET, SEC Network+

I don’t know if he is experimenting with combinations so much as he is giving plenty of opportunities to win the last couple of spots.

On the radio pre-game interview, Barnes kinda took that point a different direction. He talked about this team like a multi-tool (my analogy): some nights, some situations, against some opponents, certain guys will play in certain combinations, and in other situations different guys will see more time. He specifically warned fans (and announcers) against reading anything into who plays and who doesn't on a given night.

I think when Barnes looks at this season's roster, he sees paper, scissors, a rock, and--in Chandler & Zeigler on special nights--maybe a hand grenade.

You're not one of those football only guys that hate it when the basketball teams wins?

Heaven forbid something good happens besides precious football
This is what I hate. The idea that we are not supposed to win in basketball. Why do fans think like this? We have everything it takes to win and win big.

I don’t know if he is experimenting with combinations so much as he is giving plenty of opportunities to win the last couple of spots. I’ve posted multiple times that 8 base players have all but been determined (KC. ZZZ, SV, JJJ, JP, BHH, ORN, and Fulk) and the next guard/wing and post spots are out there to be taken. Injuries and illnesses are already disrupting the rotation so right now lots of minutes are being shared by the next 4 (3 minus QD who hasn’t emerged) and Aidoo is hopefully about to join that mix. Tamba seems like he’s almost certainly going to be taking a redshirt. Bailey, Uros, Mashack, Aidoo, and QD are competing to fill out a shorter rotation. I don’t think that QD saw the floor today and Mashack wasn’t impressive after being pretty efficient in earlier games.
Hopefully they can get it settled soon and start becoming more cohesive. From what I’ve seen 8 base players is plenty and we need to roll w them.

I’ve suggested that there could be a 12 man rotation with the base 8 and 4 more trading around the rest of the available minutes. Actually if Aidoo develops and recovers there will be 5. I just don’t think that all 5 will see the court in EVERY game. But all 5 can certainly contribute in specific matchups. Right now of the FIVE, Uros is going to have a hard time getting PT with ORN, Fulk, and BHH in the post if they avoid foul trouble and the light coming on for BHH. QD is looking more and more like this will be a developmental year and he may not see the court outside of mop up duty. Aidoo was thrown a curve by picking up the virus and it could zap his energy for months. That leaves Mashack and Bailey. I thought that Bailey had really hurt his chances when he displayed the quitter attitude versus Nova. I was shocked to see him start yesterday. He did have several “assists” (not the star type) with Powell and JJJ unable to go and Mashack slowed with the flu. Neither Bailey or Mashack emerged yesterday and QD and Aidoo were no shows. It will be very interesting on Tuesday versus Presbyterian (SEC network at 7) to see who will be getting minutes after the first 7 (8 if JJJ opts to play through his thumb injury rather than get surgery). I think that Uros has kind of settled in as a role player. He might get double digit minutes versus big teams that attempt to be physical. If Mashack is healthy, it will be very interesting to see if he takes minutes from Bailey. Actually, Tuesday could be the first time that QD has a huge opportunity.

Amazing that it is just the 5th game and there are already disruptions in the rotation with JJJ hurt and JP, Aidoo, Powell, and Mashack and possibly others sick. Being able to go 13 deep (Tamba makes 14 but still has his redshirt) might be very important.

Also in the pre-game radio interview, after Barnes expressed his joy for Nkamhoua in finally relaxing and playing like he has been all along in practice... Barnes spoke of Plavsic as one who still "tries too hard" in games and isn't playing with nearly the same intelligence and efficiency as he practices. That's encouraging news. Courtside fans need to tell Ulos their best jokes during warmup.

I've known several HS players who've come here from other countries to turn their basketball skills into opportunity for a better life--often for their families at home, as well. Their work ethic is typically incredible. It's easy to see them taking the same values and attitude onto the court, and forgetting that it still has to be played as a game.

Have we ever played more than 8 base players?

More than 8 TOTAL almost every game. I think that those 8 will play every game when they are available. They other 5 will be hit and Miss for now. I’d really love to see one of the 3 freshmen step up.

It is really odd to watch the few Ernie snd Bernie videos and what appears to be a 6 man rotation. Of course the clock ran more, the pace was typically slower minus the shot clock, and the automatic media TOs every 4 minutes did not exist in the 1970s.

I’m talking about 8 core guys. Not spot duty

Yeah, I think that those 8 will see action every game when they are able (it has been 7 with JJJ injured and then 6 with Powell sick). Hit and miss with the 5 of Uros, VJ, Mashack, QD, and Aidoo. I sure wish that Mashack or Aidoo emerge.

Sure could have used JJJ’s defense and Powell’s shooting yesterday.

fyp.

If Vescovi keeps playing at this level, and we get a healthy JJJ back in 6 weeks if he has to have surgery, this team is going to be very dangerous in March.

IF that happens AND the freshmen develop according to plan, we could indeed be very dangerous at tournament time.

I'd like to see us work the ball inside early in the game rather than jack up a bunch of 3s. Seems we shoot better from long range after we're sweatin' and breathing hard.

You know, there is probably a reason you have so many posts and so few likes. The only one who cares about your opinion in this thread is you. You are one of the grass is always greener goobs who are always looking for the black cloud behind every silver lining.

I don’t post to get likes nor do I resort to name-calling. Barnes us a really good regular season coach but hasn’t had a great deal of NCAAT success in the last 12 or so years. Point is we aren’t getting top results for the top 5 money he is being paid.

It’s not your money so why do you care?

Stop watching if you’re not satisfied with the results.

You are entitled to your opinion, but saying the same thing fifty times over and over is a little silly.

Their respective records at UT tell the facts that you are incorrect and you are just lying to yoursel, abs others. An elite 8 is better than 1 sweet sixteen. 3 sweet sixteens are better than 1. A winning % of .6777 is better than .570….. at UT. But keep pounding that drum.

With a top 5 salary, I think it reasonable to expect much better results but you don’t so good for you.

If you think they inherited similar situations, there isn’t much help for you.
