The Official #17 Tennessee vs. #20 Illinois Game Thread, 12:00 PM ET, CBS

Vescovi and Z still missing too many shots, along with Knecht not playing as much equals bad offense and droughts.

First half observations:

1) Scoring for us dropped off a cliff after Illinois woke up and started taking guarding our mid paint cuts. Our guards were wearing Illinois out on those early. Really need Aidoo to step up in the second half. If we can get him going, that will open things up for a guard as a bit.

2) Illinois has some shot makers, but too often we’ve made it easy for them with our switches. Several times Zeigler found himself being backed down by one of Illinois big guards which absolutely can’t happen. Gotta communicate better and fight through screens better to avoid finding ourselves in those mismatches.

3) Mashack didn’t get nearly enough minutes in the first half imo. He may not be the kind of guy who can lift us out of a scoring drought, but he is the kind of dynamic defensive player who can mitigate the damage of those droughts.

4) It’s time to have a chat with Gainey and adjust his usage / minutes. This is several games in a row where he’s not been able to find the mark.

5) I would have to go back to confirm this, but it feels like after that second tv timeout that we didn’t have SV and DK on the floor at the same time much. Having them both out there really seemed to have Illinois on its heels trying to figure out who they want to key in on.

Gainey had a bad half. He has had some rough stretches before, but he tends to average out. Just need to calm down and get an easy one or two to go in.

He’s been equally as bad, if not worse, on defense when he’s played. One of them absolutely has to step up on that end of the court, if nothing else.

Freddie though hasn’t played 60+ college games & hasn’t played a game at full health that counted yet.

gainey has struggled against good competition dating back to sc upstate. that’s why i was skeptical getting him to begin with.

If our fan base had any type of intelligence, we’d be on Twitter pitchforks and change would happen. Instead we’ll blame our athletes for momentum shifting officiating.

Just got to see it another 100 times and maybe something will get done…
And do what?

Would be nice if they tried running the offense through Knecht the way they did in the second half of the UNC game. Basically, have a creator run the point with pick and roll action and 3 supporters in space.

Just so happens our team has 1 excellent creator, a big man great at pick and roll, and a plethera of role players that cant create for themselves.

Own who we are and stop trying to force an offense we aren't.

Illinois took 20 treys in the first half, made 6 for 30 percent. We made 3 treys. We'll need to make more than three treys in the 2nd half to win.

The ENDLESS whining about officiating---game after game, first football then basketball---is tiresome.

Knecht if he can stay out of foul trouble needs to play the entire 2nd half. He get a lot of rest in the 1st half. This offense is just so different (in a bad way) when he isn’t on the court.

Also 27.3% from 3 isn’t going to win you many games.

Kind of feeling like the Purdue/Kansas game. Games we should have won playing hard but foul differential and falling behind late to lose. Hope not.

Some things will never, never change with our Bball team--- just can't complete a half of average or slightly above average shooting. How can a team with this much talent each season, AT HOME, shoot so poorly over and over again? We are never gonna get calls from the officials. Only way to solve that is actually make shots and layups like scholarship bball players should.
Maybe something will click in the second half. Maybe Vescovi will remember how to shoot the 3 and ZZ will find the basket. This team is once again very frustrating to watch. To think analysts at the first of the season were saying we had a chance to cut down nets... With this shooting, maybe at the NIT but not the Dance...
