The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

Supposed world class players can’t even see someone on the back side. What’s crazy is literally all 3 goals have been the same thing. How do you not learn from the first 2?

Guy was literally unmarked in the box back post for 5". Not sure I've ever seen that in a high level match.

The Dutch move without the ball well. We don’t when we’re on the attack. Everyone stands around watching the ball.

I knew it’d be tough sledding against Van Dyke and Ake, but I didn’t expect us to get beat so bad in defense. We had been so strong there all tournament.

Once again, the US shows they are an OK team but are so far removed from having what it takes to go deep into one of these tournaments. They aren't bad, they just aren't all that good. And it seems like everyone knows this, but gets their hopes up anyway. Kind of like Tennessee a bunch of times over the years.

Of course, the media immediately pivots to "2026 is right around the corner, they're so young, this is great for them to build on," etc. They said that after 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 as well. Until this squad has 7-8 guys in the starting 11 at the same quality as Pulisic, this is about as far as they'll go.

I know we hear about systems and all in football, but I wonder if there's a coach and system out there that can capitalize on the raw athleticism we've got. Put guys into positions to play.

Berhalter's stuff doesn't do that at all. We had what, 3 goals in the whole tournament? I get that talent matters, but that's bad. Especially when combined with some of the offensive offensive performances in WCQ and other tournaments.

We have talent, but we need a stronger coach that didn’t get the job due to his brother. I haven’t been one of the overwhelming Berthalter haters, and my hope that he’s replaced isn’t based on the results of this WC, I just don’t think he’s good enough.

I don't know enough about the USMNT to evaluate, but how does our team's raw athleticism stack up against the better teams in the world? My understanding is that we aren't as athletic as Brazil, France, England, the Netherlands, etc. If it does not stack up well, then it would seem like the system we run (and the head coach) is super important. Kind of like how under-talented teams run triple option in CFB.

IMO, we also have an administration that tries to serve 2 masters - build/promote MLS and have a good national team, which is bad. US Soccer should be concerned with the national team and nothing else.

Where is that striker going to come from that we need dearly
Today the defense was horrific too though. That honestly was the most discouraging thing - the US has lacked a finisher...forever basically, so that isn't anything new, but their defense is normally adequate, even against good offensive teams, and that was awful.

I just wish our guys like Pulisic, Dest and Aaronson were 2 inches taller and had another 15 lbs of muscle.

But we have made some progress.
That ultimately is what this boils down to, IMO...our country's elite athletes just do not play this sport. It seems very difficult, basically impossible, to make deep runs in this tournament if that is the case.
