The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

I'm all USA, then my boy, Bale and Wales, then England, the Netherlands and finally Belgium. Too bad, my top 3 are in the same Group

Not breaking any new ground here, but this is going to be a ****show. Qatar doing a complete u-turn on promises they’ve made less than 72 hours before the tournament kicks off. Who knows where they go from here.

After this, MASSIVE, MASSIVE respect to any teams/players who openly protest in front of the whole world. Legitimately concerned at this point for anyone from the LGBT community who traveled there under the auspices that they would be welcome in any way.

Agree 100%. All along I have hoped players would protest.

This is just another example of how corrupt FIFA has been in recent years/decades.

The WC should rotate between Europe and N/C/S America every 4 years. Thats it.
No love for African, Asian, or Oceanic regions?

I don’t really think that’s fair either. South Africa put on a good WC in 2010 (vuvulezas notwithstanding). Korea/Japan in 2002 was a fantastic event by all accounts as well. Russia was technically a European WC, but it was only slightly less corrupt than this one. There’s no reason Africa and Asia should be dismissed out of hand with regards to hosting, FIFA just needs to choose more suitable countries.

There are also plenty of countries in Europe or the Americas (Hungary immediately comes to mind) that have no business hosting for a variety of reasons.

This memory triggered me beyond belief...

That was the most annoying sporting event I've ever watched.

Keep forgetting and last minute, but do we have a predictions contest somewhere? Thread, outside site, etc

They like going to unsuitable countries because of the greater opportunities for grift, particularly on infrastructure construction. Places like the United States and Western Europe, where it is most suitable to host an event like this, have all the stadiums and other infrastructure already built. I was shocked that Canada/Mexico/US got the 2026 World Cup for this reason.

Imagine having to watch soccer sober.😀

Lol, what a mess. A successful World Cup for me is if the US blows out iran. Like a Tennessee/Missouri blowout. Other than that imagine this is going to be a tough World Cup to follow.

Not so fast USA/Canada/Mexico 2026

I’m hearing FIFA has struck a last minute deal with North Korea.

Here’s the main quote from the speech that everyone was rightfully taking him to task for. Apparently being picked on in grade school is equivalent in his mind to government sanctioned persecution of a minority group. Spare me.
Infantino began his extraordinary speech by declaring, "Today I have very strong feelings, today I feel Qatari, today I feel Arab, today I feel African, today I feel gay, today I feel disabled, today I feel a migrant worker," before claiming he understood what it meant to be discriminated against because "as a foreigner in a foreign country, as a child at school I was bullied because I had red hair and freckles."
