What's so great about the 1911??, serious question.

Because it's a 1911...

Honestly, it's a pistol you either love or hate. I find it to be the most accurate for me and fits my hand perfectly with the grips I use. I'm not big on DAO or even double action triggers, so the single action fits me perfectly. And the grip angle is spot on for me. Naturally points and I'm inherently more accurate with a 1911 (and a Hi Power, but different thread).

Overall, it's a pistol you can tinker with and get more performance out of if you know what you are doing. Aftermarket parts have flooded the market over the years and just about every manufacturer has a 1911 on their inventory sheet. But being able to tinker with it, new trigger, barrel, etc makes it enjoyable to wring performance out of and a lot like an AR in that aspect. And the fact it's been around over a hundred years and still going strong says a lot about the design itself. It's still a viable defensive arm to this day although it has been surpassed in ruggedness by other designs. Someone on another site said it best. "If I'm heading out into the mountains of Afghanistan for a month, I'll take my Glock. If I'm facing a home intruder, I'll grab my 1911."

On the other hand, it's also a pistol that garage gunsmiths think they can perform the ABCDs of gunsmithing on (That's Assault by Brownells Catalog and Dremel). And unfortunately, if someone doesn't know what they are doing, they tend to make it utterly unreliable. Again, much like an AR in that aspect.

But overall, it's a pistol you either love or hate. For me it comes down to how it fits and how many times I'm hitting the X ring of a target. And with a 1911, I'm better than other pistols.

Picked up a Marlin 336GBL in 45-70 at a gas station in Montana (yeah, that's right, at a gas station).

Always been attracted to a good old fashioned lever gun. But I never have bought one. Just don't have a great use for it and I really don't need yet another caliber to stock up on.

Hope you enjoy it.

I already own a couple of 45-70s. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to say I bought a gun at a gas station. Looking forward to hog hunting with this one.

You'll only have half a hog left. You need to be Grizzly Bear or Alaskan Moose hunting with this thing.

Very informative, thanks. I'll try one out when I go this summer to buy a pistola!

That's the key factor here. Try before you buy.
Dang right. A certain someone who's close to me had to have a Colt defender awhile back and impulsively bought one in 45 at a show only to figure out at the range that it's too much gun for her. I like the 1911s but that little booger field strips differently than the traditional style and it's a bit of a pain in the rear to reassemble IMO.

On the other hand I've bought several things on impulse that I later decided I didn't want but I know that I can always find someone to trade with.

No, I just have affinity for lever guns. By far my favorite kind of gun.

Yeah, a big-bore lever is on the list. Problem is that's behind several other "wants". (Not counting more ammo, especially any bulk .22LR I can possibly get my hands on)

plenty at outpost armory but not at the prices you were probably used to pre 2013.

My next want is the Ruger Red Label as soon as the 20 Guage is released. I may break down and get the 12 if they don't release it by Spring although another 12 is about the last thing I need.
