The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Seems like a pretty solid second day of the draft for the Sox, highlighted by Buttrey, Callahan and Fulmer. Sounds like Fulmer may be a tough pull from Vandy, but based on the way they drafted they may have some extra cash to throw around. Here's a link to a short piece that briefly outlines the different strategy through rounds 5-10 in regards to the draft spending cap.

Stras/Doubront. Gio/Dice K. Zimmermann/Lester.

Sounds like a sweep to me...

....I hope we can salvage at least one

SN: The savior, MVP, HOF'er, 154 million dollar man with the swing made for Fenway, is now not only batting 6th as jmoore said, but playing out of position in RF...at least you can't say he isn't a team player, hope he finds his stroke tonight! last time he hit 6th he went 4-5 I believe.

Iona, I would discuss the draft w/ you but I don't follow the MLB draft. It takes to long for these kids to progress. Once they start progressing up the minor league system then I start following them.

Speaking of that, have you seen what Matt Barnes is doing in our lower level? He's DOMINATING!!! Some scouts are saying he could be in the Majors by the end of next season.

Kalish looked great last night, he may get a shot w/ the big club at some point this season.

I'm very glad that A-Gon is being a team player & playing RF for us, but I just don't understand how his production at the plate has dropped so much.

Also Iona, could you see the Sox committing to Aviles at SS for a few years & possibly packaging Youk & Iglesias in a trade for a quality starting pitcher? I wouldn't mind that.

I would absolutely love to see this. I'm sure they went with best available by selecting the SS Marrero, but aside from Iglesias they have a very deep pool of SS's that are a few years away, so at the very least they are covered somewhat if they go in this direction. Who knows if Boegarts will stick at the position, but Aviles has shown that he can more than hold his own which would give them plenty of time to continue developing the other guys. This would be a great deal IMO, I would imagine that this would allow them to save some money by including Iglesias (doubt they would have to pay all of Youk's contract by including him), it would free up playing time for WM and stop with the nonsense of playing your franchise 1B in RF. Also a huge vote of confidence to Aviles who when Ellsbury is back will be able to drop in the lineup where his aggresive style plays much better IMO.

I'm trying to think of teams that would be ideal matches for this type of deal. Baltimore would be a good fit (never happen), White Sox, Twins (if they even have anything to offer back), Seattle, Oakland, Pirates, Padres and Giants too. Hopefully they are exploring all their options, I think the Sox will actually be a very attractive trade partner to a lot of teams this year. Instead of a large blockbuster deal I could see a bunch of smaller deals going down this year. A lot of pieces to work with, especially as the OF starts getting healthy.

Also, Matt Barnes is looking like the best draft pick since Jon Lester right now! I can't wait to see him climb the ladder, I think he is going to get stronger when challenged, he looks like the real deal.

@BIG3Sports: #RedSox OF Ryan Kalish (shoulder surgery) is 4-for-5 w/ 2 HR & 4 BB since joining the @PawSox & could be recalled if hot-hitting continues.

Just came across this on ESPN.com and thought it was pretty interesting.

"In the 18th round, Boston selected outfielder Shaq Thompson, an outstanding, but raw, athlete who is committed to the University of Washington. He was a top football recruit as a safety. In an unusual move, Washington is apparently going to let him play professional baseball in the spring and football with their team in the fall. He is expected to sign with the Red Sox."

Bard is making a start in Pawtucket tonight's, he's already hit 2 batters in the 1st inning & given up 3 runs.

Aviles with a big 2 RBI double after the umpire forgot what a strike zone was. I thought it was out off the bat.

How did Dice-K look in his start fellas?

Started off great, one bad inning things kinda got away from him, but I for one am very interested in his starts going forward. I don't think Bard will be getting his spot back anytime soon, I think that much is clear.

Rich Hill has been put on the DL b/c his elbow that had TJ surgery is bothering him, he is visiting Dr. Andrews tomorrow. Mark Melancon has been called up from Pawtucket.

Marlon Byrd was DAFD yesterday to make room for Dice-K. Bobby V. said the emergence of Nava left Byrd the odd man out. Speaking of Nava he was scratched from the lineup today b/c his left hand was hurting, he had a cortisone shot in it today.

Kalish homered again today, makes his 3rd homer since joining Pawtucket.

CC & Ells were throwing again today.

Sox have now falling back below .500 & are 6 games out of 1st.

I really didn't think we would win yesterday, especially when Lester got in a pretty goof strikeout groove there.

Apparently Mark Prior has been tearing it up in AAA. Hope he gets the call and makes the most of it.
