The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Red Sox have signed SS Stephen Drew to a 1 year deak worth $9.5 million.

Obviously a bridge year at SS, trying to see if Iglesias will develop & if Bogaerts is going to be the star everyone thinks.

A lot of Sox fans are upset that Cherrington isn't throwing around millions & making big time trades but that's exactly how we got into the mess we did. I actually like what Cherrington is doing this offseason. He hasn't committed to anyone long term, hasn't sacrificed any draft picks nor top of the farm players. '13 is a obvious bridge year, we just need to get back to above .500 for next year.

I always liked Drew's potential, hope he stays healthy.

I know Iglesias has proved nothing, but he's only 22. I wonder if he has any value to be packaged in a deal for an impact player OF/SP.

Iglesias will be Rey Ordoñez.

I don't think they would have signed Drew if the FO was confident he could hit as well as Ordonez next season hah

Seriously, if he could prove he could hit anywhere in the neighborhood of .250 you could hide him in that lineup no problem with his defense. I just don't see it. Package him with Salty and some mid level prospects and get some more pitching imo.

Cody Ross to the Diamondbacks for 3years 25million. SMH, you mean to tell me we couldn't give that to Ross but we could for Victorino? Lol.

To be honest I like Victorino more if he plays like he has in the past, big if tho.

Hanrahan move would be awesome if it goes thru. Saw they wanted Iglesias but the Red Sox balked at including him.

I still see a lot of potential moves on the horizon before the roster is settled.

Deal is done:

Boston sends to Pitt: 1B-OF Jerry Sands, IF Ivan DeJesus Jr., P Mark Melancon, P Stomly Pimentel

Pitt sends to Boston: P Joel Hanrahan, IF Brock Holt

I guess I don't mind adding hanrahan, but keeping.atchison and melancon might have done the same thing, especially if bailey and bard are somewhat back.

Ooo, another flash in the pan closer. Holt could be a decent player, but there's no holes for him, and if he were to play everyday it'd be in the outfield IMO.

So we basically traded a fair amount for a guy of the build we already have 4 of. Making moves just to do things.

Ehh i don't think Sands, Dejesus, Pimental would have ever seen the inside of Fenway unless they bought a ticket and Hanrahan is better than Melancon (Bailey too). Plus Holt, I like this trade...How many spots did it clear on the 40 man, that might be a factor also. And I saw that Farrell has already told Bailey that Hanrahan will be closing. They seem to have a plan, compared to last year anyway.

I've always liked Stolmy from when I've seen him in the area, he looks legitimate. Of course, pitcher's ceilings are alwaysca stretch.

Ankle and knee injuries last year along with a reliance on his cutter. I'm hoping those are some things they can correct to help with the control issues.

Then there is the fact that he's never pitched in Fenway or faced the yankees, hope he's ready for the big stage.

A Major League source told the Globe tonight that the Red Sox are working toward a contract agreement with first baseman Mike Napoli and are "hopeful" of getting it done.

Napoli agreed to terms on a three-year, $39 million deal on Dec. 3. But an issue — believed to be a pre-existing hip injury — was detected during Napoli's physical on Dec. 7. The sides have been working on an amended deal since.

Napoli, 31, remains a free agent. But he is not believed to have negotiated with any other teams since the initial agreement with the Red Sox. And while the Red Sox have not closed the door on other players, their focus has been on securing Napoli.

Jmoore I know you'll love this, saw it on ESPN today

Interesting to see Webster rated ahead of RDLR (only one spot but still), really excited for the potential of this group of young kids down the road. Ranaudo was something like #17, system is getting a lot deeper with guys like Brian Johnson and Pat Light (#21) both 1st round picks this year starting in Low A.

Yea I saw that article, also saw on twitter that the Sox farm system was rated one of the best & deepest in baseball.

Please, don't patronize us 005 with your stacked squad over there hah

Can't believe the team you guys got going on right now, GM is doing work, really wanted you to ship us Morse tho.

I think if things had gone way bad with Napoli you would have been in the mix. I think your team is solid.

Much improved from last year, a lot hinges on the rotation as usual...bright spot = Dice K and Cook won't be making 30 starts
