The *OFFICIAL* Brandon Spikes thread (merged)

Below is a "cut-and-paste" from a rant I was on on a different thread . . .

Wow! Urban Meyer has, yet again, proven himself to be the eptiome of moral character and leadership. After one of his players was caught (in high-definition no less) attempting to tear the eyeballs out of an opposing player's skull as he lay helplessly pinned beneath a pile of tacklers, Saint Urban has drawn his own "line in the sand," sending a clear message that such conduct will NOT be tolerated. The harsh punishment that he handed out to Brandon Spikes was to suspend him . . . for a half . . . against Vanderbilt . . . probably the worst team in the SEC.

Geee . . . the last time I checked LaGarret Blount from Oregon got suspened for most (possibly all) of the season for throwing a punch and hitting a Boise State player (who happened to touch Blount and verbally taunt him after the game was over). Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State got suspended for the entire season because he had dinner with Deon Sanders and then lied about it to the NCAA (incidently, his actions were not a violation of any rules . . . he was just a young kid who got frightened because of the scrutiny and questions. Anyone who has been questioned by cops or by an investigator can relate to the stress, regardless of whether or not you personally did anything wrong).

Meanwhile, Brandon Spikes attempts to blind an opponent who can't defend himself because of all the bodies lying on top of him and he gest a slap on the wrist. Players in the NFL get fined thousands of dollars for hitting someone around the knees because they could end an opponent's career by causing a knee injury. Spikes could have altered that UGA running back's ENTIRE LIFE by damaging his eyes. Not to mention the fact that this is just some gutless, chicken@#$% crap on the part of one of the supposed "pillars" of the Florida Gators team. Great leadership, huh?

I have heard all the arguments: this kind of stuff happens all the time . . . it's no big deal . . . it's football, etc. All of this is complete GARBAGE. Of course, in a society that wants to give a famous movie director (Roman Polanski) a "pass" for drugging and raping a 13-year old girl because he is a "great artist" or because the crime happened "a long time ago" this type of sickening moral relativism is hardly surprising.

All of those who want to talk about how good and upstanding Saint Urban Meyer is need to remember this crap. I have watched these late-hitting, scum-bags play for most of my life, and this is the type of crap that I have seen over and over. Can you imagine a Joe Paterno-coached player getting off for something like this with only a half-game suspension against Northwestern? Come on . . .

Have a good time sitting out for a half against a team that you probably wouldn't have played much against anyway, Mr. Spikes. I'm sure that God (oh, I mean Tim Tebow) will forgive you.

Meanwhile UT gives a scholarship to a convicted rapist.

called the spikes suspension 'a joke'. and added that he never seen eye gouging as a part of football. good for you Golic.

Overdramatic much ? He didn't even make contact with the eye.

So he just stuck his hand in there for the hell of it? Contact or not, he intentionally shoved his hand in there. He intended to cause harm. Just because he didn't shouldn't lessen the punishment.

Oh dear! Meyer has suspended Spikes for the first half of the Vandy game! I hope the Gators can pull it off without him!!! What a terrible punishment!!! (I am new to this board. Where is the sarcasm button?)

The strongest comments came from Mike Golic, co-host of ESPN’s morning, “Mike and Mike” radio show. Golic has some credibility. He was a defensive lineman at Notre Dame and an eight-year NFL veteran. He has been at the bottom of a few of these piles. So what does it mean when he calls this, “one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life”?

And what does it mean when he says it was worse than when Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State’s Byron Hout in the season opener? (Blount initially was suspended for the full season by Oregon. But several weeks later the school announced a tentative reinstatement, and he may return this week against Stanford.)

“You can clearly see Brandon Spikes’ fingers go into the facemask of the running back for Georgia, and, I don’t mean just go in there — go in there and twist around,” Golic said. “It is a bad looking eye-gouge. And I know this guy is a tough player and I know he hits and I know he’s considered one of the best linebackers. But that’s one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life. Ever. Ever! To be that good of a player and have to do that – stick your fingers in a facemask and try to blind a guy, eye-gouge him, is pathetic, Brandon! Pathetic, that you would do it!

“There needs to be some disciplinary action. Everybody wants to talk about LeGarrette Blount from Oregon for punching that kid. I’ll tell you what. I’ll take the punch over this garbage. Any day of the week. Any day of the week over that garbage on the field of sticking your fingers in somebody’s facemask and trying to blind him. Stick your fingers in their eye? Are you kidding me…?”

Golic later said: “What a horrible move that is. What a classless, unsportsmanlike move that is."

Meyer goes soft on Spikes with half-game suspension (UPDATED) | Jeff Schultz

Mike & Mike and the MNF crew all agreed on Sportscenter 1/2 a game is a complete joke!!! This is ridicious! Where is the SEC Commish putting his foot down on sportsmanship now?!?

I remember clicking on that story earlier today and I was thinking "Well at least Slive got some backbone" but then as soon as I saw Urbie's name pop up I knew what I was reading.

Does he honestly think he can get away with this? I mean, he could, seeing as Slive has yet to show any intent to do what's right with any other problems in this league. Maybe he'll make it a suspendable offense to get in the way of Brandon Spikes' fingers. How dare that GA player put his eyes in front of Spikes' hand?

And just read the rest of the article. Urbie was saying that he was "retaliating". What kind of excuse is that? Think about the message that sends to the players, that it's ok to play dirty if someone did it to you first. If we allow that kind of mentality to go unchecked we'll be seeing a lot more of "Brandon Spikes"s out there.

Considering he has already served the penalty imposed by the court, why should he not be able to play if he is good enough? It isn't like he just got away with it like Spikes. He was already punished, no reason for CLK to go any further than that.

This belongs with the 2 other threads in the NCAA Forum since it has nothing to do with UT Football.

he was retaliating on a attempt eye gouge when we wears a visor... ive never heard something so dumb outside of gainesville. just from it.

The more I think about it the more I agree. The one half suspension is a joke. Meyer screwed this one up.

No, he's just an *******... as demonstrated by his "meeting" with Tim Tebow last week.

Florida fans won't care as long as the winning continues though, but I would laugh my ass off if Urban completely lost control of his team after Tebow leaves.
