The *OFFICIAL* Brandon Spikes thread (merged)

Three initial thoughts:

1) I am glad Meyer took the time to talk to him and draw his own conclusions. That was the right way to handle it and I note that, contrary to what so many of you predicted, Meyer didn't just ignore it and say no problem;

2) No matter what the punishment was/is, some folks will say its too little. Given the apparent conclusion that it was wrongful, I'd have preferred to see a one game suspension, but a half isn't so far out of the realm that its unreasonable to do that.

3) Vandy is next. What's he supposed to do, wait for another week? If so, people will claim he did that for an advantage.

It's their next game, had they postponed his suspension for a couple of weeks to make sure he would sit out against a cup cake opponent I would have a problem with it. Sitting out a half is a fair enough result of his actions IMO.
I concur

I agree that he has to suspend him against Vandy, its just out the schedule play out. But I think maybe even one is a little too leniet, considering the fact this is SENIOR CAPTAIN. But no doubt one should have been required, not just a half.

Now the SEC should issue thier suspension and he should be out the entire Vandy game.

In Meyer's defense, he can't help the way the schedule plays out.

However, if the NCAA is threatening kids with a loss of eligibility for taking visits during their junior year of high school, they should step in. An eye gouge is a little different than 200 bucks.

If Slive is going to huff and puff about coaches talking about officiating (after the SEC has to suspend a crew for an inability to do their jobs correctly) then he should step in. Eye gouging is a little more extreme than bad mouthing piss poor officiating.

Someone posted a video of Brandon Spikes trying to gouge UGA runningback Washaun Ealey's eyes after a play this Saturday. Many were curious if any disciplinary action would come from this. ESPN released this article today........Urban suspends him for the first half of the Vandy game........wow :shakehead:

The SEC said they would review the video later today. I hope he gets more punishment. Who knows with Slive though :dunno:

At the very least he should have been suspended a game. I think the school should bench him for the rest of the season.

It's Vanderbilt. Meyer has the opportunity to at least pretend he cares, and he still only suspends him half the game.

I agree. A half game suspension is certainly better than a "he'll be punished internally" cop out. However, the seemingly "watered down" half game suspension sends the wrong message -- that what he did is in some way partly excusable. It is not, no matter what any UGA players may have done prior to that. Besides, Florida will have no problem stomping Vandy without Spikes. Meyer said he talked to the SEC. Well, IMO Meyer and the SEC made a bad call by not going with a full game suspension.
