THE OFFICIAL DUKE/UNC B-BALL THREAD 2020/21 (WORSE, SLOWER, MORE MASKS, LESS FANS, LESS W’s)

I think the loss to Miami on Monday was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back. I will say this though, with the ACC being down and with Duke showing glimpses of being a capable basketball team, running the table at the ACC is very possible, but at the same time very unlikely.

To add to all of this, if Duke cuts down on bad turnovers, and UNC doesn’t shoot out their ass on 3’s Duke wins by 6-10 points last night. I won’t be surprised to see Duke beat UNC in Chapel Hill in March.

And if Carolina is a little less sloppy with the ball and a little more efficient at the foul line, they might have won by 15. 🤷🏼‍♂️

K's interviews this year that I've watched are lacking. He doesn't seem fully invested. I'm hoping it's just a Covid thing. There's lots of problems with this squad, and he normally wouldn't be afraid to address them to the media. He even discussed being at the end of the tunnel in a taped interview that aired yesterday morning. If he's going to win one more, I think it has to be soon. I don't think he wants to go out with no fans and on a shi*** season though.

Does Hurt go to the draft? I think Johnson does. Obviously, Goldwire graduates. They have two highly touted big men committed for next year. Assuming Roach doesn't go, Trevor Keels might be interested in re-joining him. Maybe between now and November, Steward and Roach will learn how to guard.

One of the writers for GoHeels.com (or whatever it’s called now) tweeted after the game that it was just as sweet to win in H.I.S. without fans. I disagree. I’ll take a win over Duke anytime I can get one, but it didn’t feel at all the same to me. And what a weird year, huh? Carolina has been painful to watch most of the year. For the first time in my life, I’ve taken to checking the score before deciding whether or not to watch the game. Weird times.

I watch all our Vols games, though. Knowing that it’s more likely than not that I’m going to see a serious level of defensive intensity keeps me tuning in.

I think he’s far too competitive to go out with a season like this. The guy is a maniac. I think if the team were different he’d be more willing to challenge them publicly.

It's so wild how the 4 premier blue bloods (Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky) all stink this year. That's like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St, and Oklahoma all being .500 teams or worse in football this past season and being a total non-factor in any championship conversation.

Bizarro world.

Definitely don’t think he’ll go out without at least one more serious run. But just everything about this season is weird

I watched it. The most frustrating team I’ve watched since the 94-95 Cherokee Parks led team. This team doesn’t have a leader or an identity, other than being poor defensively and weak with the ball.

Which might be why K sounds worn out and distant. He doesent have a kid that walks in the gym as a born leader this season.

I think Hurt leaves too and everyone else comes back

I mean he will, but not many play D up there. (inb4 Huff disagrees. It's true regardless)
True, but a lot of those guys can lockdown when they feel like it. I don’t think Hurt can guard a 4 and definitely not a 3. I saw him the other day and he’s even thinner in person than he looks in on TV.

As far as Jalen Johnson is concerned, there is no way he doesn’t have red flags going up when it comes to the draft. You don’t quit on Duke and K mid season without there being repercussions, especially when he already had character issues to begin with after his dust up with IMG. Anthony didn’t have to comeback last year for Carolina, but he did. You don’t quit on a K or Roy and not expect it to reflect on you poorly when it’s time to get drafted. There are way too many people w/ ties to Duke in high profile positions throughout the NBA. I don’t think this is a situation where his talent outweighs his potential negatives.

Huff is right, teams are looking for valuable pieces on a championship team. If you play no D and aren’t Trae Young you aren’t playing very much on a good team. This is probably the high water mark for Hurt’s draft stock, though, even though he’s a second-rounder

Still disagree. You can call it defense if you want. If you can score (which Hurt is inconsistent with) you get to play.

Disagree all you want. Unless we’re talking about superstars, a guy who can defend and can’t score is playing more than a guy who can score and can’t defend, because that’s not helping your team much.

The most in-demand players are those who can shoot and defend multiple positions - someone like Gary Trent is more valuable in the NBA than Hurt will probably ever be (and more than Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor and Austin Rivers and our other scorers ever have been). Okafor and Parker have both approached 20 PPG in the pros before and where are they now?

Have to say last night was the best Duke has looked almost all season. I know it was Wake, but the D looks a lot better as a whole contesting the passing lanes and being active . I would say Hurt is on a roll right now. Huge game on Saturday night. Win at Uva and the possibility of a postseason becomes realistic.
