The Official Houston Astros Thread

How about those Astros? :p

This opening day win will probably be the high point of the season. lol!

it's all downhill from here, unfortunately probably way downhill

Almost definitely.

I expect them to finish last. The change to American league, the new look, the idea that they're building something new gives me a little hope the team can compete for a while. But yeah, no way they could sustain the success. I think it's possible(unlikely) they could come out of the gates playing strong for a short period of time. So, maybe the first 30 games the can compete before falling off completely. I'm not expecting anything from them. The payroll is all you need to know about how good this team will be. You don't need a hundred million dollar payroll to compete but when your whole team makes about the same as 10 Yankees player's salaries(I made that up), you shouldn't be competing.

hopefully they are actually rebuilding and taking this move as a fresh start and reason to improve rather than middling along below mediocrity. too bad they don't have really any softies in the west, like a KC or Minnesota to beat up on. actually KC is rated as having a higher percent chance of making the playoffs this year.

Anxious to see this next game today. Pretty sure Washington will have his guys ready to perform better at the plate.

Darvish to become the second victim of this team of destiny that continues on it's quest for a perfect season.

Game #2 of the 1st season long perfect winning streak in MLB history starts at 7:10 local time.

#Astros

Break these guys up already! Thats 2 in a row vs the Mariners! We are on a hot streak!!!!! Look out Bean Town!

2013 Houston Astros: Baseball's Worst Team Is The Most Profitable In History - Forbes

Jim Crane, who owns the worst team in the majors and is quietly making more money than any baseball owner in history.

The Astros are on pace to rake in an estimated $99 million in operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) this season. That is nearly as much as the estimated operating income of the previous six World Series championship teams — combined.

Sixty-four major leaguers make more individually than the Astros’ current 25-man active payroll makes collectively. The New York Yankees pay nine players more than the Astros payroll. Twenty other teams pay at least one player more. And Jason Bay, who is not even on a team, earns more than the all of the Astros, thanks to an old contract with the New York Mets.

Crane told ESPN The Magazine, “Once our minor league system is filled in, we’ll move up into the top five or 10 in payroll.”

That's pretty unbelievable that a team about to finish last for the third straight season is the most profitable team in MLB history.

Wonder if he'll uphold his end of the deal... The Astros have gone from having the worst farm system to top 5. Assuming they finish the with #1 pick yet again, that will only bolster their farm system. Looks like it's about time for Crane to put up or shut up and start doling out some money.

Since I don't follow prospects and the MLB draft, anyone know if there is supposed to be a player(s) that's close to being a surefire stud? -- Didn't seem to be the case the past two drafts when the Astros had the #1 pick. But then you have a team like the Nationals who got Strasburg and Harper. Both of which had a ton of hype surrounding them.

He won't have the hype of Stras or Harper, but Carlos Rodon (LHP) looks to be the top prospect right now.

If they want a position player... trea turner may be the move. Doesn't have MEGA star potential but he can play short and would be top 3 fastest players in the majors right now probably. Can do a lot worse than Correa/Turner as your left side of the IF for the*future.

Didn't think about Turner.

Also if Dylan Cease can show some development with secondary pitches he could easily jump in the top 5 and consideration for #1

Beede is back in this draft right? He'll go fairly high I would think. I don't know much about this draft though at all.

Yep, he is. Will be interesting to see if he still has control issues this year. I don't know much about this years draft either outside the top 10-15 or so, and even then don't know much about some of them.

See, I don't know about any of this. The Bagwell and Biggio era is far removed for me. I'm an Astros fan through and through but I know nothing about the future. Appel was the pick last year, that's easy enough to follow. But without looking, didn't the Astros draft a 17 year old short stop the year before? These are hard years to follow lol. We're talking about down the road. A road that's hard to follow but easy to ignore.

Simply put....

Casey Clausen is my favorite UT QB.

And Shane Reynolds is my favorite MLB pitcher... maybe. Roy Oswalt was pretty sweet too.

But guys like Peyton Manning, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettite etc. They aren't the players I love and behold like most. Maybe it was just because I grew into sports during a transitioning period. All I know is, I've stuck by all of my teams and will continue to do so. Baseball is another story when you rely on bringing players up though. That's a different kind of fandom and hard to follow.
