I've had some time to reflect on the final show as well as the series as a whole and I have realized why I was so disappointed with the way it ended. Let me start off by saying I was convinced by season 2 that I would be unhappy with the ending but couldn't really put my finger on it. I was always intrigued by the island and it's properties that brought the plane to the island and for me that was the driving force for my interest in the show. The characters were well played and I liked the dynamics they had. For me though the main interest was always the island and ultimately because of my fascination with the island the scenes they devoted to the light in the cave did not satisfy me, there was much about the final season that did not satisfy me. I always had a sneaking suspicion that the ending of this show was going to remind me of an old episode of Fantasy Island (I know a real blast from the past) and in a way it kind of did.
In the end it was a good show, the characters were top notch and the story line was good, good enough to keep a viewer who knew he was going to be disappointed interested in the show. I find it hard to watch pretty much anything on network tv these days, there just isn't much that interests me although I did enjoy Sons of Anarchy for a while.
I guess I'll just stick to watching the History Channel and Nat Geo since many of the shows interest me. I also like The First 48, I saw another poster mentioned them earlier.
I'm confused. They explained the island and how everyone was brought to the island before the finale. Are you saying you were disappointed because they didn't explain that in the finale?

I suppose that depends on your definition of 'explained'. The writers spent years hinting at an underlying explanation, using such tricks as ancient statues, pyramids, egyptian and other symbols - the list goes on and on. Yet at the end we are left with 'its just a magic island, dude, get over it.' A big fat copout imo.

No, I am simply saying that I always found the dynamic of the island much more intriguing than the characters and the properties of the island and the mysteries surrounding it were more of a draw for me. What we were shown was Desmond punching keys on a computer to stop some super magnetic field from going haywire, and when he failed to do so all hell broke loose causing a plane to go down. What I am interested in was why does the island contain these powers, what is their origin etc. Because these were my main reasons for interest in the show I was naturally going to have a let down at the end because the writers chose not to take that angle with the story.
I understand your need to set those who completely misunderstood the finale correct but you come off a little condescending to those that understood it but simply didn't care for it.
It was a legitimate question. I wasn't sure exactly what you were saying. I don't see how that in anyway is condescending.
I'm not trying to imply that you didn't understand anything nor am I trying to convince anyone that they should have liked the finale.
One logical explanation for the way the series ended would be another series and\or movies. I think that enough continued interest and debate and demand, and this happens. Even though we have been told no, that wouldn't happen. Who knows...... If the rumors don't start to fly in 6 months then probably not.
This is the best review i have read of The End so far.

Also a comment below the article i feel sums up why alot of people felt incomplete and jilted after it was all said and done..
"I'm really sad the show is over. I will be able to conclusively, flat-out tell people who ask me "Should I rent the DVDs and watch Lost?" no, don't do it.
Emotionally I feel vaguely satisfied, because in some weird reason it appears people ended up happy. Whatever the sideways storyline was about, what it meant, etc... everyone got what they wanted. It was nice to see. But as a logical, rational human being who invested 6 years of my life into this show...I can't do anything but hate this.
Tons of unanswered questions, LAZY plot holes, and even my fuzzy good feelings about how it ended on an emotional note fall apart after some cursory examination. So if each character was really going to go on at that point, that means Kate never found anyone after Jack left? Neither did Sawyer? It seems like the people on the plane who got away...their lives apparently went nowhere after they left the island. Plus if Jack and crew are in Purgatory, HOW exactly is Desmond made aware of this so he can start making things happen in the background? And why was it even needed in the first place?
In the end I have to begrudgingly respect what they TRIED to do on Lost, because I did watch for 6 years and I'm genuinely sad to see it gone. But I will absolutely so, with no compunction whatsoever: In the end it didn't work."
the only explanation that works for me is that the whole series was jack's saga. it sucks that they took it in that direction in the last episode with all the other interesting characters on this show just left in limbo if you will. i agree with kb. the ending for me was ok, but nowhere near great for such an awesome series.
Everything on the island was real, it happened for everyone.
i don't doubt that. the way it ended, it focused pretty much from his point of view or at least it was an underlying tone that it was his journey so to speak. the show was a multi character driven show and it sure didn't end up that way imo.
Did you want to see how long Hurley and Ben protected the island or Frank's crew land somewhere? I think Jack's death was a perfect way to end the story on the island, just me.
