The Official Tennessee Titans Thread II

Looks like the NFL is going to grant 28 teams $1.6 million in additional cap space this year as a result of cap penalties levied on Washington and Dallas for dumping salaries in 2010.

Something to keep in mind:

The Titans have between $29 and 30 million under the cap with the new Cowboys/Redskins cap penalty. However, if the Titans were to sign Manning and dump Hasselbeck, it would accelerate money against the cap from Hasselbeck's signing bonus and create some dead money. I don't know exactly how much it was.

Anyway, with John McClain's latest report, Bud is going all-in for Peyton. It'll pay off in financial terms with luxury suite sales and other incidentals, but will it pay off on the field?

@McClain_on_NFL: Bud Adams is ready to give Manning anything he wants that will fit under the cap to get him to sign with the Titans.

Manning would be a huge upgrade in the QB position. While he is coming off an injury, so is Williams who has a history of injuries. Could get both...who knows.

Actually I think it happens (sadly), as I said in the other topic, why is he dragging this out? If Denver is the only real AFC team left why not sign tomorrow and help get his buddies signed? Truth be told I believe we were in contact as soon as he was released and he used the Arizona/Denver visits to set his market price for the Titans.

:fool: Yep, it was all a play. Peyton Manning, the master manipulator.

We get a free $1.6 million dollar bump to our salary cap number of $28.1 thanks to the Cowboys/Redskins.

4 million is what it would cost against the cap if they were to dump Matt H.

Thanks, bud.

I was wrong about the Cowboys/Redskins penalty adding $1.6 million to the cap. Apparently the cap number was released with that in mind.

Peyton had his meeting with Miami tonight we're going to be his last visit. I think that has to be big news.

If the Titans are serious about Mario Williams, I'd like for them to have some sort of idea whether or not it would be worth it to continue pursuing Peyton after the meeting today so they can put the full-court press on Mario if PM isn't going to happen. I'd hate to miss Mario just because they couldn't offer due to their pursuit of PM and he leaves the team at the altar.

Also, Adam Schefter tweets that Steve Hutchinson will be visiting the Titans soon.

It's like Christmas today.

Yeah I know, I'm all for signing Hutchinson. I've been waiting for free agency since the end of last season.

Also interesting that the official Titans Twitter is tweeting about Manning visiting the Titans and passing along Manning updates.

Gotta give them credit, they're trying to fire up the fan base one way or the other. Definitely more exciting than the standard approach.

I'm not sure how much Peyton values the other ex-Colts like Wayne & Clark, honestly, or how much of that is a smokescreen, but I just couldn't anticipate either of them being signed by the Titans in this package scenario. If we could manage to sign Peyton, Hutchinson, and Williams and then draft help in the secondary I would be ecstatic.

Bayless gave us a 0% chance of landing Peyton, so go ahead and book him being a Titan :)

I have to say that I understand the pursuit of Manning from the business perspective. If signing PM brings the Titans playoff success, then it will be worth it. However, I would prefer signing Mario Williams, bolstering the defense, and developing Locker because of the long-term potential. That being said, I do not believe signing PM necessarily retards Locker's development, though he will sit a lot longer than we anticipated. Locker really surprised me last year and it seems his future is very bright. I wouldn't be shocked if he won the starting job over Hasselbeck this year.

I am ok with either scenario, as long as the team gets better. Personally, I'd prefer Williams, but wouldn't be disappointed with Manning.

Hutchinson is friends with Manning and they share the same agent, we're hoping that will help us with Manning.

For a guy who had one of his Colts' guards tossed into the pocket by opposing defenses, I'd say yes.
