The Official Tennessee Titans Thread II

Don't know if anyone else heard this, but Rob Bironas was on 102.5 the other day in Nashville. It was a pretty good interview, but one part definitely stuck out: he claimed to have made four 75-yard field goals in a row at a practice facility in Reno, Nevada in 2003.

Do you guys think that's a legit claim, or was he just messing around with the hosts?

Maybe so. Reno's air is much thinner as it's in the high desert and has an elevation around 4500 ft.

I think he probably begged for an opportunity to kick one that long because in the season opener vs. Jacksonville they went for a ridiculous 69 yarder before the half and it was well short, though.

it's also much easier to kick those further ones when a full defense isn't rushing time-wise and forcing you to arc your kick over them.

they can take their time, take as many steps as they want (vs a rushed, pressured 7 yard start), and can arc it much lower when there's not a defense they have to worry about knocking it down

it's why you see some of these guys making them from 60 yards (or even just outside their range in general) in pre game warmups, yet you rarely ever see them in game

thin air also does help

trajectory

the farther away, the lower the ball is kicked to get the distance. The lower its kicked the easier it is to be blocked when you have the D sticking their hands up or even jumping in the air.

Talk of the S position in the draft. Also a mention of Janzen Jackson.

I still do not believe CB will be addressed early in the draft with ATV and McCourty returning. S is a position that must be addressed, though. If Mark Barron is around at 20, I'd say he's the pick over any other position. Other than Barron, though, I think they'll go with a defensive guy that puts his hand on the ground.

No way they draft an OL in the 1st. That's not how this team operates.

Jim Wyatt tweets that the Titans and the agent for Cortland Finnegan talked on Friday. He states they're far apart in $$ terms and he most likely will not be franchised. However, he also says the two sides will meet face-to-face at the combine this week.

Would like to retain Finny, but only if the price is right. I don't see him being a $10 mil/year guy, and that seems to be what he wants.

Interesting take. I agree that they shouldn't reach for a player based on need alone. I was thinking this morning that his draft seems like it's really lacking in a lot of areas, especially at S.

A look at WR prospects who might be available to Titans | Titans Insider

Also, congrats, John, for spelling Mohammed Sanu's last name two different ways in one article, but not getting it right either time. It's cool, though. :)

Glennon rehashing the same information from the Titans Insider blog in this morning's Tennessean:

Tennessee Titans keeping eye out for offense in draft | The Tennessean | tennessean.com

At least he got Sanu's name right this time.

Interesting question, though: What if either Michael Floyd or Kendall Wright are available at 20, but Mark Barron or one of the top pass rushers aren't? Do the Titans take another 1st round WR instead of reaching for a position of need? I think so. This is Britt's contract year, if I'm not mistaken and he's only played about 50% of the games in his career because of injuries. Locker is going to need another weapon that develops in case Britt walks.

I'll really be glad when FA signing period starts so we can start getting some clarity on the team's draft needs.

Ruston Webster at the combine saying they're looking at pass rushers. Munchak said the same in an interview on Sirius. Also said they're interested in WR. Danced around the Finny and Griff issue.

Webster also says that he might be willing to overpay for a pass rusher in FA in order to improve the defense. Surprised to hear him say that, but will be skeptical they'll spend much until they actually do.

Also, from Jim Wyatt:

Jim Wyatt said:
Webster said team is still working in contract talks with all players and expects them to all be on roster, including Cortland Finnegan

Webster said #Titans have biggest needs on defense and it will be focus on draft, but looking for playmakers on offense, too

Munchak said if the #Titans do lose Finnegan then he feels comfortable with the young guys. He wants Finnegan back, however

Boom? Terry McCormick tweets that the Titans will consider moving Amano to guard. He needs to be benched, but he's better at G than C.

Lots and lots of stuff on Twitter coming out of the combine. Interesting info and this is a fun time of year to be a fan of the NFL.

Sounds like Babs will make it back. Good news, for sure.

Jim Wyatt @jimwyattsports said:
It sounds like the Jordan Babineaux deal will get done with #Titans. Agent J.R. Rickert said the sides have made "significant progress"

Also, Pat Kirwan mocks North Carolina OLB Zach Brown to the Titans at 20. I like it. Actually, love it. Ayers/McCarthy/Brown would be an insane LB crew for the foreseeable future.

Pat Kirwan said:
20. Tennessee Titans: Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina -- Zach is a run-and-hit Will linebacker who can go sideline to sideline. He has blitz skills and can cover a back out of the backfield. He had an impressive Senior Bowl week.

Terry McCormick tweets that he is "hearing" that Brandon Carr could be Cotland Finnegan's replacement.

Excellent Babs has amazing speed, and I think could get more ints if the Vols got a dline that can get a pass rush.

Who is replacing Griffin?

Lot of tweets from Jim Wyatt with some interesting tidbits.

Jim Wyatt @jwyattsports said:
If it's between Griffin and Nelson, personally I'd rather have Griffin. He's a two-time Pro Bowler with more upside #titans

Bengals safety Reggie Nelson in play if the #Titans don't put the tag on Michael Griffin. No long-term deal in works for Griffin now

I continue to hear #Titans are interested in Colts DE Robert Mathis if he hits FA, although Indy is reportedly in talks to retain him

As for #Titans CB Cortland Finnegan, team still not talking long-term deal with his agent. I still don't expect him back in 2012

Some buzz about LB Barrett Ruud retiring after injury-filled season. I asked him via text. His response: "Absolutely not true." #titans

#Titans remain interested in bringing back S Jordan Babineaux and linebackers Patrick Bailey and Tim Shaw

While the #Titans have talked to the agent for DL Jason Jones, two sides still far apart in $. I'd expect him to hit market too

The #Titans haven't had any contract talks to bring guard Jake Scott back. He's expected to become a free agent as well on March 13

Jason LaConfora is full of crap. Seriously, he gets more wrong than he gets right.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter said:
Titans will not place their franchise tag on cornerback Cortland Finnegan, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

So, remember when a bunch of people here wanted Gregg Williams to come back and be the head coach?...
