The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Also looking ahead to the off-season we have some very big question marks heading into 2018:

1. Do we extend Mike Mularkey? - After reading the ESPN article (Titans can no longer be lukewarm on Mike Mularkey - AFC South- ESPN) I agree with the author somewhat. The ownership needs to come out one way or the other now.

2. Do we make a change at OC - Again this gets back to the Mularkey question. If we decide to make a change we're absolutely going to have to extend Mike's contract by a season or two to hopefully land a quality coach. No assistant is going to hitch their wagon to a lame duck HC who is also experiencing job security issues while in a playoff run.

3. What to do about Dick LeBeau? - Should he decide he wants to coach in 2018 should we retain him or pursue a younger replacement? Here are his stats from his two years as DC:

2016
Total Yards - 357.5 (20th)
Passing - 269.2 (30th)
Rushing - 88.3 (2nd)
Points per game - 23.6 (t-16th)
Sacks - 40 (t-6th)
Third down percent - 37% (6th)
4th down percent - 54% (19th)
Penalties - 137 (32nd)
ToP - 29:28 (10th)
FF - 4 (18th)
Rec - 6 (24th)
Interceptions - 12 (t-18th)

2017 (2nd year)
Total yards - 328 (13th)
Passing - 239.2 (25th)
Rushing - 88.8 (4th)
Points per game - 22.2 (17th)
Sacks - 43 (t-5th)
Third down percent - 36% (8th)
4th down percent - 62% (27th)
Penalties - 119 (29th)
ToP - 30:24 (19th)
FF - 23 (t-6th)
Lost - 9 (t-14th)
Interceptions - 12 (t-18th)

4. We got to go all in on fixing the pass defense if we want to make the next step. Byard should be the only one with a secure spot. Wasn't impressed with Ryan or Cyprien all year and Jackson better make a tremendous leap in play next year to keep his starting spot.

5. Offensive Line - Our tackle combo is the best in the game IMO. We definitely need to look at upgrading the guard positions though. I don't think Spain nor Kline are our long-term options here. Ben Jones at center is serviceable.

6. WR Corp - The only productive member here is Matthews. Davis needs to stay healthy and we got to get Taylor more involved in the passing game instead of him running those WR end arounds. I'd also look to bring back Decker, for all of his drops the last few weeks, he still is a nice 3rd or 4th option.

7. TE group - The strength of the team. I expect us to carry the same 4 TEs into next year: Walker, Supernaw, Smith, and Stocker.

8. QB - Marcus will still be the guy but he needs to show in 2018 that this year was a fluke. I'd also look at drafting a QB with a similar style for a long-term option at back-up so we don't have to change the offensive scheme should he go down again.

9. RBs - Henry will be the starter next year no question, needs to improve pass blocking though. If Murray is willing to rework his contract to be cheaper I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him. If not look to the draft for his replacement.

Mularkey needs an extension, but Robiskie needs to go. The offense doesn't need to change dramatically, nor should it, but it needs to be catered a little more towards Mariota's strengths and give him more leeway to make calls on the field.

I also like the idea of continuing to build the OL. Make it a freaking brick wall. We're set with Conklin and Lewan for a decade but we need to make the interior elite as well.

Also if I were in charge I'd also consider making changes at the WR and maybe even QB coaching positions. I really don't know what Frisman Jackson has done to justify making the jump from being Temple's WR coach last year to being hired this year to our's.

One of the things that scares me is if we have another Butch Jones situation with Mularkey, meaning no matter who the OC is they'll be running his offense and not have any leeway with it. Though a better play caller would be wonderful

I know I will get flamed for this.

I appreciate that the ownership is serious about winning, but man I feel bad for Mularky. That can’t be a good way to work. Once we got back to pounding the ball the offense looked right. Henry ran like we know he could.
Agreed.

If Mularkey didn't want the criticize he shouldn't have hired Terry Robiskie. He is going to have to go in another direction at the OC position after our season ends if he wants to keep his job long term.

Also agree here. I think Mularkey is fine as HC but we should move in different direction at OC. Never cared for that hire

Did you write all this?

If so, good work man. I appreciate you putting the time in and penning a nicely written list.
