They did reschedule games that got cancelled because of the infamous 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks that got moved late in the season as in Christmas winter season.
That’s why I am confident the Steelers Titans game could just get rescheduled to a new day which most likely I expect happens.
The NFL has vast money so this really wouldn’t be a lack of money flaw to fix this issue.
That’s a little bit different, though, because they just pushed back an entire week of football - one played by every team across the league - to the very end of the season and pushing back the playoffs, which they were to do/ balance out because of the already present bye week between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl (they just removed the bye week and went straight from the Conference Championship round into the Super Bowl the very next weekend). Presumably, I would think they would want to keep the Super Bowl bye week as a contingency if needed later into the season or playoffs and won't want to use the idea of a game eating up that safety net unless they have to or until they have to.
I think postponing and rescheduling is likely what will happen at some points during the season, it’s just a matter of how to properly do it with the schedules of the - say in this case - the 4 teams involved (TEN, PIT, MIN, and HOU) given their remaining schedules and current bye weeks (TEN and MIN = Week 7, HOU and PIT = Week 8). Oddly, the similar pairings of their bye weeks might create the ability to reschedule a game to those weeks at the expense of the bye week…
theoretically rescheduling TEN-PIT wouldn’t be terribly difficult, off the top of my head either:
(1) TEN-PIT game could be moved to week 7
- PIT-BAL gets moved down to week 8 (PIT and BAL original bye week)
- TEN, PIT, and BAL now have week 4 as their bye
(2) TEN-PIT game could be moved to week 8
- TEN-CIN is moved up to week 7
- CIN-CLE (who originally play week 7) is moved to week 9 (both teams’ original bye week)
- TEN & PIT now have week 4 as their bye; CIN & CLE now have week 7 as their bye
HOU-MIN is a bit more difficult. Again, HOU’s bye is week 8 and MIN’s bye is week 7. However, both play GB over those weeks (HOU-GB is week 7 and GB-MIN is week 8), GB’s bye is week 5, and GB-ATL is this weekend.
At least one of the benefits of this situation is that this is a cluster of teams that (almost) all play each other, which could also creates a little more flexibility (moving either TEN-HOU game accounts for half of the teams involved):
TEN - HOU x2 - 10/18 and 1/3
TEN - PIT - 10/4
HOU - MIN - 10/4
Though you also have PIT-CLE and MIN-ATL on 10/18 (week 6) and PIT-CLE and MIN-DET on 1/3, so those games would also need to be considered.
So you could possibly have some combination of the two, like possibly moving the TEN-PIT game to week 7 or 8 and flipping the 1/3/20 HOU-TEN and MIN-DET games to HOU-MIN and TEN-DET and trying to move things around to make the 12/19 or 12/20 date work for TEN-HOU (would get into having to do something with IND’s schedule...it would take more work than I have lain out right now).
They likely had discussed a variety of ideas, theories, or means of balancing something like this in the offseason given the situation of this football year; they planned out over the top on almost everything else, they had to have a contingency based on the possibilities of something more than just 2 games getting postponed (or in worst case, unable to be played).
