The official UT QB controversy thread

Jones said veterans have helped push the young players, and he offered a few names when asked for examples of great leadership. Perhaps surprisingly, they were all linemen

If it turns out, all other things considered, that the passing game of all four candidates is relatively equal. Sometimes they're good and sometimes they're not, then CBJ will pick the QB that can best move the ball with his feet; freshman or whatever. This is the logical reason he has not yet named a starter. He's waiting to see who jukes the best.

He'll choose the best game manager first. Peterman and Dobbs are better runners than the other two but none would be mistaken for Cam Newton or even Connor Shaw.

I can agree with this. Which doesn't bode we'll for Worley. I've said too much already on this topic. I'm ready for the season to start and whoever is the starter I'm rooting for them.

Yes. if it comes down to wheels then Peterman or Dobbs will be the starter... Ferguson would have a shot.

I just hope that we get a starter because of one players clear seperation from the pack. I hate two qb systems. If you have two you don't have one....

That's what I'd like and it's really my only beef with Worley. Would be nice if he took all that experience he's gained and gave us an edge.

I may have read it wrong but apparently there are limited practices this week. To let the guys get ready for classes. With limited practices I'd be shocked if someone besides Worley took 1st team snaps.

i saw this last year and florida had a good year.

however, i think there are a lot of problems when you don't have a starting qb named and actually think florida's offense would have been better if that had been the case last year

It would be insane to try to draw any comparison between last year's Gator squad and this year's Vol squad if for no other reason than the overall talent level of the defenses.

"If you have 2 QB, then you have none" -Skip Bayless, dumbass ESPN in his only moment of clarity this century.

Well Skip, what do you have when you have 4 QB? How many do you have then?

Using his formula that would be -1 QB and that's not at all good.

Go Vols, I support you now matter who takes the snaps back there..

Be interesting to see what comes out of practice today on the QB front. I believe the middle of the week they are off for class prep. If they are going to start making it sound like Worley is the guy I'd expect it to start now.

The good news is we have a competent veteran with SEC starts to lead us into the season. I've given Worley some grief but that is a plus. Vanilla is consistent and isn't always a bad thing. Also to his credit his one plus has been he's consistently protected the FB. That said I think this offense is already lacking play makers and we may need one at QB to realize our full potential.

This author has an interesting point of view, and a different reason for Peterman to start the season. To protect the "former 4 stars from the wolves".

I didn't read it that way. He was saying he was an overlooked dark horse and the true freshman really just weren't ready. He's also saying as others have Worley may be defacto starter but his spot is as firm as jello with the competition gaining steam. The only counter to that point has been where the first team reps are being used, which is a valid measure. On the interview and intangible side though all praise seems to be flowing around Worley and not to him.

I think if it's close, you go with the younger guy. Worley either has to take command of the Offense or be prepared to be the backup. It's not up to me though.

Either of the freshman shouldnt' start untill November. No need in throwing a freshman QB to the wolves in October.

i agree with this. if the results aren't going to vary that much, might as well gain good experience for when we are relevant again.

From the open practice, Dobbs did the best. IMO Peterman was the biggest letdown. #1 QB in high school that hasn't progressed. I've read online about how Ferguson was taking the lead, but I didn't see it. Maybe an off night, but Dobbs gets the nod by mid October.

Peterman wasn't the #1 high school QB in the country and by what everybody is saying he did the best in the scrimmage.

There is no QB controversy. The various media groups have taken sides and pushed the guy they want to be the QB, with tweets and stories. Butch knows who the QB will be. The only controversy is in the minds of the media.

FWIW, Rucker just stated on the Zone that he doesn't see anyone surplanting Worley by the beginning of the season. He did go on to say that CBJ did make a change his last year at Cincy when they had a 6-2 season going which surprised some people.

All I know is that I lost all faith in Worley when he threw up an off balance, across his body, pop fly to the other side of the field. If the LB didn't fall and Tom Smith didnt catch it and make a play that would've been ugly. Anyone else remember that pass from the open practice?
