The Overwhelmingly Negative Response on This Board

For those of you who do read and have the ability to think, now it the time to do just that. This man has left a trail of clues. Try to pick up on them. This is truly a home run hire. Get behind him and stop this negative drivel.

+1000 - At first, I was like oh brother. Then I did some reasearch, and I am feeling much, much better about our new HC. I will wait a bit to decide if it is an out of the park home run hire, but I'm seriously thinking right now it may be a long triple that could be stretched into an inside the park HR. Let's support coach Martin as highly as we supported CBP. He deserves that, and he is now our HC which means that he is MY head coach, and we all must get behind him 100%.

I sure hope he can re-recruit both Hopson and Harris for one more year, and get Jones to honor his commitment. Also, we need at least a serviceable big man for next year. I'm thinking our sanctions will be 1/3 to 1/4 of what they would have been if CBP was retained. Most of the charges were directed at him and his staff more than UT. There may be 2 - 4 schoarships reduced over 2 years, and minimal recruiting sanctions for a few months, but I'll be surprised if it's much more than that.

I've done a lot of research, and it appears they went with the "high character" guy over coaching ability. I'm okay with getting a high character guy as long as we don't expect this to be the next step upward results-wise. Pearl made UT a perennial top 20 team with occasional forays into the top 10; the next step would have been a guy who can make UT a perennial top 10 team with the occasional drop off into lower half of the top 20. What we have, based on what this style of play usually produces (and this is based purely on the numbers Missouri State put up), is something more like Vandy AT BEST.

LOL at this thread....You know everything about basketball huh? Come on dude, people are going to have a different opinion than you, it does not mean they know less about the sport..If you were a basketball god and knew everything about basketball you would be coaching right now and not posting on this board.

This hire screams cheap to me, but I could be wrong..No need to insult your basketball IQ if i'm right though.

Chances are that you are, and very much so at that!

Well, one thing is definitely certain. Being a minority helped in getting this coaching position. The NCAA likes minority hires in football and NCAA restrictions are usually reduced if a university hires a minority. I really thought Alabama's coach would end up here for that reason.

They didn't hire just because he is black. Crawl back into your hole

Missouri State's coach prior to Martin didn't have a loosing record during his tenure there and his record the year before was 17-16. I believe the winning percentage of Martin/Hinson would be very similar.

I noticed that too.

The main reason given for Hinson being dismissed was they weren't able to make the NCAA tournament while he was coach, something Martin wasn't able to do either in 3 seasons.

Support your Coach, he's a UT man now. Most of you that are whining right now were doing the same thing when Dooley was hired. Give the coach a chance and support him like you should. GO VOLS!

I couldn't identify a good bball coach at the Final Four.

I wanted Brad Stevens. Or Frank. Or even Marshall.

I wish Tennessee had hired a bigger name coach with a longer record of success - but with that being said - maybe this guy does alright. He just has to win. That's all. If he doesn't, we'll fnd another one who can.

It is what it is.

Brad Stevens isn't going to go anywhere other than an ELITE basketball school, which we are NOT.

Frank would prob jet in a few years back to the NBA leaving us searching for another coach again. The fan base needs someone to stay and be the face of the program.

It appears the Pearl haters are defending this hire with the same vigor that they had when calling for Pearl and or Hamilton's firing. Seems a little self serving to me.

the 2 are separate events. Thinking Pearl should have been fired has no bearing on whether I think Martin is a good choice or not.

That's true, I was just making an observation about some of Pearl and Hamilton's biggest detractors. I really don't know how Martin will do, just like no one else here does. I hope he does great, because that's who we now have.

who is "defending" the hire? I absolutely thought Pearl had to go for the good of the program and am not calling this the homerun that a few of the others have. I think this is a much better hire than the initial reaction warranted. I think the guy's a solid coach and will do things the right way. I think his results have been very solid and that his recruiting has been pretty good to date. The initial response around here sounded like we had hired Jeff Lebo.

How many scholarship players did Martin inherit?

Everyone says 5, at least lets hope its 5, seeing he went 11-20 that first season with them. I'm looking for the details on that, if there was scholarship restrictions, graduations etc.

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I'd rather not win than run the four corners. Anyhow, both Keady and Painter have put up big win totals in the regular season and have tanked the tourney.

You and MHF wold get along great. Also, that is absolutely ridiculous

Look I'm not completely against the hire, I just think there were more accomplished coaches available who would have taken the job. He might be very successful, let's hope he is. I just feel like UT passed over more accomplished coaches to hire him. Which I don't understand, since UT had made 6 straight tourneys.
