The Overwhelmingly Negative Response on This Board

I couldn't identify a good bball coach at the Final Four.

I wanted Brad Stevens. Or Frank. Or even Marshall.

I wish Tennessee had hired a bigger name coach with a longer record of success - but with that being said - maybe this guy does alright. He just has to win. That's all. If he doesn't, we'll fnd another one who can.

It is what it is.

Sorry just kidding, give the man 3 years just like dooley and then make your opinions...

Hopefully he will win, but if the NCAA comes down on UT basketball hard it will be hard for him to win atleast for the years we are on probation...

Hat's opinion is anything but positive. Mine is positive.

Compared with the way he has felt about the majority of football/basketball coaches over the past 20 or so years, his opinion of Martin could be considered high praise.

Well, one thing is definitely certain. Being a minority helped in getting this coaching position. The NCAA likes minority hires in football and NCAA restrictions are usually reduced if a university hires a minority. I really thought Alabama's coach would end up here for that reason.

The Overwhelmingly Negative Response on This Board is as warranted as your derision of them

Under the circumstances this is a good hire. Hard to get a big name with the uncertainty of NCAA sanctions hanging over the program, not to mention our returning roster next year. If only Steven Pearl was returning next year then maybe Jay Wright would have taken the job.

They can change the uniforms to a purple & green combination, shave their eyebrows, and run four corners if it wins.

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I'd rather not win than run the four corners. Anyhow, both Keady and Painter have put up big win totals in the regular season and have tanked the tourney.

If anybody on here doesn't like this hire then they haven't researched Cuonzo and are completely ignorant or how good of coach and person he is. Cancer survivor at age 39, NBA player, coached at Purdue for 8 years, turned Missouri State around (in 3 years) to win first conference championship EVER. Coach of the year in their conference (first for Missouri State EVER). Went from winning 11 games first year to 24 in his 2nd and 26 in his 3rd. We are lucky to have him.

I think it's very solid, given our self imposed rules and the current situation that Pearl wrought. Martin aligns with me philosophically, so I believe he'll win if he can recruit. I think he'll recruit fine, but that's the crap shoot with all the mid major guys.

This is an interesting point that I hadn't really thought about before. Will the self-imposed sanctions levied against Pearl (e.g. no off-campus recruiting for one year) apply to Martin? The same question arises regarding the recruiting limitations on the assistant coaches.

WHen the Ravens hired John Harbaugh three years ago, well...everybody panicked. Here was a special teams coach who nobody had heard of becoming the coach of a team loaded with outspoken veterans. It was panned by the majority of the fan base before he had a chance.

Three years later, the Ravens have gone 32-16 and won a playoff game all three years. The haters haven't shut up, but they've won nonetheless.

Also, Mike McCarthy. He was signed on by Green Bay after coordinating one of the worst offenses of all time. I think we all know how that turned out.

It doesn't have to be a "sexy" candidate, nor does it reduce the chance of our hrie being a good one.

This is an important selling point for me as well. I'll take a guy who walked into a difficult job and built it into a winner on the brink of NCAA appearances.

I'd like more experience. But the experience he has will be valuable with our program as it exists now.

Not sure I'd call Mo. State a "difficult" job when it had been a solid team for quite some time in that conference before he got there.

Haven't been to the NCAA tournament since 1999 (and they beat Tennessee, interestingly enough) and hadn't won their conference regular season until this year. This was the first time they had won the MVC. When Martin got there, they had 5 scholarship players and won but a handful of games. So I don't know if I would call all that "solid."

Whether this is a bad, good, or great hire only time will tell but the hire went as I said. Someone nobody new. Check my post I new we we're not getting any of the "name" coaches. It is not TN's MO.

Missouri State's coach prior to Martin didn't have a loosing record during his tenure there and his record the year before was 17-16. I believe the winning percentage of Martin/Hinson would be very similar.
