The Runner's thread

I've been dealing with runners knee for about 2 years now. Anyone got that problem? Was training for a marathon when it got really bad about 2 years ago. Since then I've only been running about 4 miles 2-3 times a week but it still flares up.

Anyone have a suggestion? Where I run near my house is very hilly. I think that may have a big part to do with it. I'm going to try to only walk downhills I think that may help and work on my form, hip first. The only thing I am doing now is training with the Maffetone method, low heart rate training. I really like it so far, think it will help a lot if I stick with it for about a year. Would like to do a 15k and half marathon at the end of the year.

anybody have any helpful suggestions for shin splints (mainly inner, lower leg, not higher or outside of leg like some cases)? I play football and my legs take a major beating doing that but I ice, take ibuprofin (to reduce swelling), and just got some orthotics to help me run better. Anything I'm missing? thanks

I would stop running concrete if at all possible and train on grass preferably. Might be best to get a bike and ride for 6 weeks until it hillls.

thanks, but we're starting the season so I don't really have that luxury! But I will probably do that in the future

You could try doing low weight high rep leg extensions. It will help strengthen your knee. I go to a sports chiropractor. If your pelvis is out of alignment it can put stress on your knee causing pain.

Interesting, cause I have been trying to run with my hip forward/pelvis in and it seems to be helping some.

Go to coolrunners.com, they have some articles on stretching, specifically for shin pain. It helped me out tons! Might want to look into proper form when running to! Coolrunners has all you need for running info!! Great site!!!

That helps me also but if one side gets twisted too far in front of the other than you get stress on your knees. I'm fortunate cause my chiropractor is an ultra-marathoner and century cyclist. He is pretty good at making sure more than my spine is aligned.

Go to the main page and click on the training tab. Then on the left side of that page is an aches & Pains tab click there!! You should be good to go!!!

haha its cool, i figured it out after a minute! thanks for the link, theres some good info there. I am kind of concerned though, because in an article it said that if you have shin splints long enough, you can develop a stress fracture(s). And I'm kind of thinking that might be the case... as its really sensitive right on the bone

Welp, time to dig this back up. Ran 5 miles tonight and I'm back training hardcore for the half marathon.

I'm running for the first time since high school on November 7th. Doing a cross country obstacle type race, kind of like Warrior Dash. I have a 2 or 4 mile option. It's all for fun and to get muddy. Any tips?

Nice. This is the best weather to be out running. I still can't run though. I really need to see a dr. I'm limited to a mile on the treadmill after my workouts about twice a week. Heels still hurt for the next day but not too bad. I'm looking to bump it up a little every week or so. I hope to be up to a 5k by Jan without too much pain. The bike and the pool have been my friends the past 3 months.

I bet, I wonder what's causing your heel troubles...maybe KD could help

I think it's plantar fasciitis but I'm not sure. I just keep putting off going to the dr to find out.

I thought it was your heel that hurt? Plantar fasciitis is on the bottom of your foot.

If it is PF, get a golf ball and roll the ball under your foot for 10-15 minutes twice a day. It should go away in a couple of weeks. I had it really bad and this worked for me, and I never have had a recurrence.

I'm pretty sure I have PF. I've never heard of this trick. I just take my foot out of my shoe and rub the bottom of my foot and/or walk around barefoot for a while. I work retail and stand on my feet all day. It gets bad. Will try this.

Started running again. Just been doing about three miles on a treadmill right now.

I've been wearing my old worn out running shoes lately. I'm looking to get a new pair because my other ones have been giving me shin splint. I've narrowed it down between the Adidas' adiSTAR ride 2.0 and Asics' GT-2150. Anyone have any insight on these two shoes or another shoe you would recommend?

Also, I bought a pair of Nike Free Run+, I've just never been a fan of Nike running shoes and haven't heard anything good about them. So, I think I am going to return them. I've heard they are good for short runs and such, but I plan on working my way up to 5+ miles a day and not sure if Nike Frees will be good for that.

Sorry for the long post.

I'm a fan of asics! I only buy the solid sole ones too! They last a lot longer, IMO!

Me too. The "old worn out pair" I have now is a pair of 2110's I believe. They have just been through a lot.

The only reason I am considering the Adidas is because a friend of mine wears nothing but Adidas to train in and he has said nothing but good things about them.
