The Runner's thread

Now that basketball season is here I'm going to do more sprinting workouts than running.

3 miles yesterday in the woods. Last mile in the dark. 1st time I've done that. It was fun. Gonna do it some more especially with the time change.

Since I haven't been able to run much, I've been working on my transition here lately. 30+ min on the bike then straight to the treadmill for 1.5 miles. (my feet haven't been that sore afterwards. That's what got me in my sprint tri this year. I got off the bike after 14+miles and my upper legs felt like they were 100lbs each. My run time was horrible. I lowered my previous time in the swim, bike, and both transitions. Slowed down on the run by just over 2 min and missed my goal by 1 min 26 sec...

I didn't know you were a triathlete jhen. What races/distances have you done?

I've just done 1 sprint tri the last 2 years. I planned on doing 3 this year but my feet started killing me. Its a 600 meter swim, 14.3 miles on the bike, and a 5k run. I am gonna shoot for 3 next year. The series does 2 at the same state park(end of may, and mid aug) and I want to compare my times and then I will do the same one I've done the last 2 years.

Btw, I don't consider myself a triathlete. I'm just a slow guy trying to do a triathlon.:)

I'm the same way. I've done 2 Xterra sprints. My goal is not to be last. :) The swim is my achilles heel.

Didn't do any last year. New babies have a way of interrupting training. This year I'm gonna try to do a couple of road sprints and at least one Xterra sprint. If I feel ambitious I might do a full Xterra at the end of the year.

Yeah, Chance arriving hindered my "training" alot earlier in the year.(Not that I'm complaining) Swimming is also my weakest leg as well. I haven't mastered swimming with my head in the water to level out my body. I have to think too much and can't maintain controlled steady breaths. I swim without goggles with my head up. It takes me about 17 min to swim the 600 meters and then run up the hill to the transition area. The fastest guys do it in just over 9 min. I also have a hybrid bike instead of a road bike. It gets the job done though.

I was talkin smack to my sis-in-law. I just have to make sure I beat her at a sprint in the spring.

There were some women that put my time to shame... My goal for the 1 I've done the last 2 years is to finish in under 1hr 45 min. 1hr 49+ the first year and 1hr 46+ this year. I would like to shoot for 1hr 40 min but I doubt it. I thought about taking some swimming lessons. Not sure it would help though. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

The Total Immersion videos helped me. They help you focus on body position and then the breathing falls into place. I think the DVD is $40.

My problem is going out to quickly. Plus my 1st tri was disastrous so I have negative thoughts of drowning.

I would love to do a sprint tri, but I have to master the running part first. I'm okay at swimming, but I am an experienced cyclist. I was supposed to compete in a cross country running event on Sunday but had to back out because of foot issues.

Friend of mine who is a race director is starting new marathon next year. Its a trail run with 3400' of elevation gain. How stupid would it be to make that your first marathon?
