The Runner's thread

3 miles last night puts me at 47 for the month and the year. Getting off to a good start towards my goal. Hopefully I can stay healthy and crush this goal of 500 miles in a year.

Suncoast half this morning. Met my under 2 hour goal, but not a great effort. Running another in early March, so will hopefully improve. Feels great, though!

I really want to get into running and get myself in good shape. I'm already thin, but I'm wanting to get my heart and lungs in good shape so when I do things it's not as easy to get fatigued.

I need some advice from some of you that have been doing this awhile. How should I start out? Walks, jogs, distance, etc.. I haven't even ran a single mile in over a year so I will be starting from scratch keep that in mind and give me recommendations.

I am fairly quick. Run like a 4.7 40 so not blazing fast but quicker than an average guy on the street I guess. My problem is when it comes to distance I am just awful even if I try to pace myself. Last time I ran a mile I did it in like 7 mins flat so that's decent but I was noodle legged the whole last half and once I finished I was light headed and puked my guts up. How do I get to where I can do it consistently? Where when you finish you feel good about yourself an your not on the ground feeling like crap? Lol.

Start with a couple miles and build from there. There's all kinds of programs out there.

Don't forget speed work and not just distance. Speed work is what is going to help improve your time more

A lot of running is being goal oriented. You need to have been running for a while to go out and run to just run a long distance.

Is your expectation a 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon, or ultra marathon?

Once you decide your distance that is when you can design a program to help you reach that goal.

They next step will be deciding on how fast you want to finish that time. I would like to encourage you to start out with a 5K or a 10K.

If you have absolutely no idea what kind of time that you could run a 5K in a good way to set a standard is go out and run 1 mile as fast as you can. If you can not complete 1 mile then do 1/2 a mile and just double the time to see a mile time. You are going to want to ad 2-3 minutes to that time to set your pace.

So if you run a mile in 7 minutes then you should try for your pace 9-10 minutes. Do not feel bad if you are slower than this. We are only trying to find your starting point.

Then you are going to want to incrementally increase your running distance trying for your goal pace.

Most people can usually do a 5K in 30 minutes if you are a healthy male fairly easily. If you are slow than that it is ok. It will take you about 2 or 3 months, but in that time frame you will be able to easily get below that. (since you say that you are not over weight)

hope this helps

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess after awhile I will run a mile and see what my time is to get a good idea. If I'm completely dead after that then I'll slack off and go easier until I get into shape. My goal is a 5k. Nothing major, but I have no background in running so I think its a good beginners goal.

Also I have a question. I have an extremely fast metabolism. My doc says I'm perfectly healthy I just have a very fast metabolism and it keeps me thinner than I would like. I've been trying to workout and eat more and the right things. I keep being told running will help my health, but I'm afraid all the burnt calories will just keep me right back at not gaining.

Yeah. I'm a novice as well and just sort of started by getting a running app and working on running a 5k. At first I could not run the entire distance, but I just kept at it. I don't follow a particular regimen or training schedule. I just go out and try to run as much as I can 4-5 days a week.

You will burn a lot of calories when you run. You will need to do weight training of some sort, or a specialized diet.

Until I started weight training I was looking like a sick cancer patient(no offense meant to anyone with cancer). You need to supplement your running with lots of proteins, and vegetables.

You could always try the couch to 5k program. It's a program designed to take someone who has no running experience and allow them to complete the distance in so many weeks. If you see that you are able to complete the program quicker than what it's designed for you can always change your goals towards a sepcific time.

If you have a high metabolism and you are going to start running you need to make sure you eat plenty of good calories. Lots of protein will help. Good luck and keep us updated in this thread.

Another 2.5 or so today About 18 minutes or so, but considering its been too cold to run for nearly three weeks I'm not too disappointed. Signing up for another 5k in April, hopefully this one will be a bit more organized.

Put in 40 minutes on the elyptical to get my run week started. Knee feels good. My horrible cold is clearing. I think this week will be a good run week. I want to see some 5k's in the 23:20 or faster range or I want to see some sporting 5 mile times.

4 miles last night. Had a little pain in my left ankle through out the run. Had to stop twice to see if I could get the pain to go away. Second time I stopped it didn't come back. My legs are a little sore today and I think it's because I was trying to compensate for that pain.

IronMAN!

Took the dog out for a walk yesterday in the snow for about 3 miles. She loved it.

Then I ran for about a mile and half. Did the first mile in 7:55, had to stop due to terribly slippery conditions. Lotta fun to run out in that.

Getting tired of this super cold weather. I feel like I could be running at speeds that would allow me to set some PRs but I am having to back off due to all the ice and what not. Saturday looks like it might be decent. So I may go for broke then!
