The Runner's thread

Wow, I don't know what happened, but I went out and crushed my old 5k PR of 25:17, with a 23:30.

I am flabberghasted. I looked at the stats and the times, and it all seems Legit to me. I just can't believe that I shaved off nearly 2 minutes from my old PR. I certainly was running hard and really faster then I ever have, but this is shocking.

that's awesome Nerd. Congrats

3 miles out to the Iron Mike Statue (big statue found on several traditional Army bases), iron mikes around the statue (aka, walking lunges), a stop to do pull-ups and 3 miles back. 54:10 total time.

I've gotten to where I do something a bit different. I'll do about 20 push ups. run a mile (its about 1.1 miles around the circle of my house), then I'll rest for about 20 seconds, do as many push ups as I can, and repeat it three times or until I don't think I'll make another. Usually nets me about 100+ pushups and a couple miles. I like it because it breaks the monotony a bit.

I do something similar on occasion on a quarter mile track:

Sprint to a corner
25 push ups

Sprint to opposite corner
25 sit ups

Repeat over and over.

Sometimes you have runs like that and you wonder how you did it. Congrats Nerd.

I used to run my distance at a track and then run stadiums and in between the stadiums do push ups and sit ups. It's nice to break things up from time to time.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys! I went back and ran last night and purposefully made my course more difficult. Coming up with paces in the 7:14-7:30 range (did that for 2 miles till I got a bad stitch and had to stop), as opposed to the 8:00-8:20 range, so I am happy. I think this was a mental hurdle, where I just didn't know that I could go that hard, that long. I also found I get a lot better 5k by frontloading. Go out and blast away that first 1.55 miles and if I have to back off a step, for the last part so be it.

Sad. I also probably need to reconsider my use of headphones while running. I am not sure I could give up the headphones, but I understand that it is dangerous. Especially so given that the majority of my runs are at night.

Oh yeah. I need to go to just keeping my headphones on just one ear. These headphones block way too much noise to be safe.

My wife works with the DA's office here and worked a case where a woman running was rape and she was wearing head phones while running and never heard her attackers. Ever since then she has not worn her head phones at all.

I have always worn my headphones. It's habit that I probably need to break.

Very Happy!

Well I was a bit apprehensive about my 23:30 5k time on Tuesday. I thought my route might have been too easy or it might have been a fluke or the GPS was off. Yesterday I tried to make my route more difficult but caught a cramp/stitch 2 miles in. Today I went at it again with a more difficult route and actually set a new PR by two seconds. This lets me know that everything is legit and I was just not pushing myself hard enough!

I also went with just wearing my headphones covering one ear. It felt a lot better! I was able to hear my surroundings and also how terribly out of shape I sound when I run.

Good way to go into two days of rest. Which I really need, my knee hasn't felt great and my legs are just flat out tired.

Just ordered one of these for my night runs:

I also wear a reflective vest and a reflective legband. My hat also has some reflective paint on it. When I walk the dog I make sure to use a reflective leash.

I am trying to make myself as visible at night as possible.

6.07 hilly miles in below freezing temps. Snot was frozen to my upper lip. 22+ miles for the week, 37+ for the year. Need to find a cheap half marathon in the March timeframe to help prepare for my May 4 All American full Marathon.

make sure the rest of y'all get your miles in for #megsmiles.

As for headphones, I rarely, if ever use them. You're not allowed to run with them on post (where 95% of my runs take place) and it makes me paranoid to do it anywhere else.

Trail 3.5 today @ 7:45 pace. It's was about 24 degrees at the time I ran. Ground was frozen.

I noticed a lot of people on my Facebook feed who ran for #megsmiles today.
