BTW, I should share my Dad's story. Any runner would appreciate it.
My Dad is an old beat up, heavy football player. He took up running when was about 30 cause he kept on getting injured playing contact sports like basketball. He ended up running about 9 or 10 slow marathons. He kept meticulous records of the miles he ran, and around the age of 40 he discovered that 25,000 lifetime miles (the circumference of the earth) was a reachable goal.
He went after it and last year he was within 1,000 miles and suffered cardiac arrest after a run. He should have died for many reasons, but one of the reasons he made it was because his heart was so strong from 35 years of running*.
He's running again. Slower than ever, but his heart health is a lot better than it was and he's only a few hundred miles away.
*He has a genetic predisposition to cholesterol buildup and he had 5 main arteries almost totally blocked.
