The Runner's thread

Have not had my doctor confirm, but I'm fairly certain I have a stress fracture in my left foot. Pain began after race on the 7th. I rested it for a week and tested it yesterday with 3.5 miles - stupid mistake. I have 5 weeks before my next half, so hoping that's enough time to heal.

What's your guys's favorite piece of running "equipment" you own? Could be watch, shoes, shorts, etc...

I have to say mine is the buff I earned from finishing the Wildcat race. I wear it every time I run or don't. It's a multi use item. Headband, ear cover, neck cover, sweat wipe, or mouth/nose cover. I also have a favorite pair of 3" inseam Nike shorts I found at Salvation Army one day and Asics promo shirt that I won at the Runner's Flat 20M in the drawing that perfectly wicks the sweat and doesn't irritate my nips.

Yurbuds: Once they are in, they never fall out.

Asics Gel Kayano shoes: fit perfectly and haven't really had any ankle problems or shin splints since I started wearing them a few years ago. I get the previous model on 6pm.com and save $40-50 bucks

Sounds dumb I guess, but my favorite part is that I'm 33, been running a lot for six years now, including long distance running for three years now and other than the occasional rolled ankle, I have no serious joint pains or issues running. Looking to really amp up my total mileage next year, do a lot more halves and fulls as well, so we'll see if it holds out.

I might try to finally do a half this spring. Finally got my wife to start running a bit, but she says she doesn't really have an interest in going further than our 10k.

Whatever I'm running on. I don't run with music. I wear a GPS but it's not like it's a must. Just me and my mind.

There's something to be said about the excitement of lacing up a new pair of running shoes for the first time.

A lot of people solely run in one shoe, but while I love my Pure Cadences (and I'm getting the 4s for Christmas), right now I'm also running in a pair Newton Motion IIIs and the Mizuno Sayanora 2s.

Absolutely. I'm in the one shoe group as I've found Saucony Cortanas fit me better than any running shoe I've tried. I just got a pair of 4s and they continue to be great shoes (for me).

after reading some of the times yawl post. i think yawl are insane. i run every day, ans cant get close. at all. now. ive always had decent strength numbers. as i get older ive made a personal vow to streamline and 'not lift a weight over 50 lbs'. i work weights to high rep and then exhaustion. and body weight most days is sufficient. ive strength trained and cross trained for 15+ years. my sprint #'s were always decent. not a great LD runner. if i push pretty hard i can push sub 10 minutes on a 5k.

any suggestions to get under that 10:00 hump consistently?

I don't think running every day is a great idea. I alternate running and lifting days...gives me a day to recover from each.

There are lots of ways to increase your pace. I think the mental aspect is perhaps the most important. Ways around that: go with picturesque and different routes to avoid boredom. Do you listen to music? Sometimes I need motivation (something heavy or a good electronica/dance playlist), sometimes a good chill list is good (I ran to the "Winter Acoustics" playlist on Spotify tonight). Consider a running app (I use MapMyRun) or a GPS watch, where you get feedback on your pace. Try to run faster each mile, try to beat your last run. Or, you can try intervals, where you run a little faster for a minute or two, then back to your normal pace for 3-4. You might also find a running partner that will push you.

Hope this helps, and happy trails!

Interval training. Also running with a group can help if they are a bit faster than you.

6' mile completed

So glad to have that done. I won't hate running so much now that I can chill out on pushing myself so hard. I do various forms of cardio, but I'm going to try to run a 7' 30" mile every month to somewhat maintain.

there are women in their 80's who are faster :) ..seriously tho, i appreciate the help. i used to be faster, but just recently got back in. ill try the intervals, that helped with strength numbers.

I recommend intervals and "the long run" every week. The long run is a run aimed at getting to whatever distance you desire it to be. 5k, 10k, half, full, ultra, etc. The Army has made me a big fan of 60-120s. You can start with 30-60s. You sprint for 60 seconds (or 30), then walk/jog for 120 seconds (or 60). Do at least ten sets. For the long run, pace isn't overly important initially, you're just getting your body adjusted to going longer distances. Warning, the long run is highly addictive. You'll reach your goal and set a new, longer one. Then you'll want to destroy that goal. Then one day, you're on mile 17 of a full marathon thinking "what the F have I gotten myself into?" Then you finish and you're blown away and you start thinking about getting even faster, even though you're starting to get old.

If you are in K-town, Runners Market is my favorite.

Not sure if you're in FL, but Fit2Run is great. Fleet Feet is also a good store with better national coverage.
