The Runner's thread

Any of you have recommendations for running in the cold? My times are all way down, and I have a ton of trouble breathing when it's anywhere below about 55 out. Gym membership is out of the question til next year as I'll be out of the country for a little while.

I wear tights when it's below 40 degrees or so, and I like a single layer sweat-wicking thermal top (Nike, UA cold gear...) and something to keep my ears warm. The cold doesn't really bother my breathing (esp compared to suffocating summer heat); are you sure you don't have a mild case of asthma?

Very sure. I do have some sinus issues, which I suppose can get exacerbated when it's cold.

Might try some nasal steroid spray for a while (otc Flonase or Nasacort) twice a day. They help with vasomotor rhinitis, which can be triggered by cold air.

I actually have some sitting around but I haven't been using it. I'll try it out and see what happens.

My experience is that pre sprays and all that only last a couple of miles. The throat lozenge and/or fireball last a lot longer for me. I sweat heavy even in cold, so it takes below 25 for tights instead of shorts. I’ll start in gloves and a beanie, but they usually come off quickly

I've got some extra lozenges around, too. I'll try both this morning!

Anybody have any methods they use for extending runs? Right now I am at 6 - 7 miles and stuck. I'd like to add a couple miles to that on a consistent basis, but everything just kinda zaps out at that point.

Whenever I've had the urge to go longer, I just plan a loop that forces me to finish that distance to get home. Good playlist. Take water for that distance. Some people like gels.

I normally treadmill run this time of year because of the cold, but maybe forcing myself outside with some longer there and backs will force my hand. Thanks.

It's hard for me to go more than 4 miles on the treadmill. 30 minutes is about my max. Keep your ears warm, get a good thermal wicking top and tights, and you should be good down to about 32 degrees.

I really like Bloks by Cliff. The strawberry and watermelon flavors are my favorites. I'll use gels for really long runs (11 miles or further), but I have to be very careful with them. They cause digestive issues if I don't run off whatever it is that is in them.

It's important to note if you do use Bloks, gels, the jelly bean things or whatever, that you take them at good times. If you're running 6-7 miles and getting exhausted, start around mile 4, maybe another block at mile 6 and so forth. If you take them too late, you're going to still get burnt out before you get the benefit. Also, drink them water and slowly introduce yourself to them. Try different ones, as everyone has different digestive issues.

I always start long runs with one of the Stinger wafers.

I like stinger the best. And I’ve tried a bunch. Goo (or any other gel) is the worst by far. The bloks are pretty good too. I usually take one 45 minutes before the start and then every 3 miles (for a half).

The jelly belly sport beans are pretty good too

I know I’m a shoe who**, but I absolutely love these. Owned a pair of the first generations as well. On Running is the brand, Cloudflyer is this specific model. Lightweight, comfortable, great support and incredible response.
