The Section 103 Postgame Report.

Josh Bone just tweeted that he fractured his wrist last night.. I would start a new thread but I don't have at least 20 posts....

Shooting is not going to be this team's strong suit.

they've got to be better than last year. Take out Maze, Prince, and Chism, add Goins, Tatum, and Harris, and I think it will be. Otherwise, that's too much pressure to put on williams and harris to score in the paint.

Whats up guys - I'm a new grad student at UT. Came from Charlotte (49ers) where basketball is king. Obviously, coming from a basketball school, I'm excited that basketball season is here in Tennessee.

Anyway, I wanted to know if you guys could give me the run down on the team... I went to the game the other night and the team looks like it will be strong when they get the rotation and all right. Hopson looked great, but I was told he's been streaky over the last couple of years and hasn't been the "one and done" player he was expected to be.

Who's the leader? Who's supposed to be the go to guy this year (assuming thats not the leader)? Expected starting rotation? Brief description of the guys I'll be seeing a lot of?

I know I could sieve through all of the threads on here for that info, but I figured it's easier to just ask.

Excited to be a part of the UT family. Go Niners, Go Vols!

To anyone that watched, what starting lineup does it look like we're going with? I've been out of the loop with basketball for a while...

Starters will be Goins, Hopson, Tatum, Harris and either Williams or Fields. Fields got the start against Brevard. McRae also got the start in Tatum's absence. Looks like McRae, Pearl, Golden, and Maymon (when he arrives) will also all get significant playing time.

As far as the newbies, I think the best parallels for PROJECTIONS I can draw are Goins=Watson, hooray!, McRae=Hopson with better defense, and Harris=nobody we've ever had although Slay would be the best comparison in terms of skill set. Harris is springier though!

Don't know enough about Fields yet, he kind of seems like Elgrace Wilborn.

I remember the announcement at the half asking fans to make their way down to the lower level during the Buzz years... Buzz was such a good person

We have about 12 guys competing for 10 spots. We have a guy who won't be eligible till mid-December, so he won't play till then, but figures to be a factor. At the moment, the rotation is:

PG- Melvin Goins Senior/Trae Golden Frosh
SG- Scotty Hopson Junior/Skylar McBee Sophomore
SF- Cam Tatum RS Junior/Jordan McRae Frosh
PF- Tobias Harris Frosh/Kenny Hall Soph/Steven Pearl SR
C- Brian Williams Senior/John Fields Senior

The leaders are Goins & Williams. The staff and fanbase want Scotty to step up and be the leader and go-to-guy, but that doesn't look like it will happen. It might though.

From all accounts, Tobias will be the go-to-guy.

Goins- Good defender. Decent jumper, can get into lane. Needs to work on ball-handling and pick-n-roll offense.

Hopson- Excellent athleticism. Good stroke. Can get into lane whenever he wants. Has to improve intensity and defense, along with leadership.

Tatum- Good athlete. Best shooter on team. Defense is weak. Injury concerns. Can get to rim and finish.

Harris- Most talent. Can score in many ways. Hard-nosed rebounder. Good passer. Looks to be a star.

Williams- Improving rebounder. Solid one-on-one defender. Has soft hands. Needs to finish stronger.

McRae- Raw athlete. Decent stroke. A lot of talent.

Golden- "Bouncy" athlete. Can play 1 or 2. Can score in variety of ways. Good stroke. Needs to improve decision making.

Fields- Can block shots with anybody. Solid rebounder. Not much of an offensive player.

Hall- Great wingspan and length. High energy guy. Good offensive rebounder. Help D needs work. Okay post offense.

McBee- Okay shooter. Decent ball-handler. Gritty defender. Can rebound for his position.

Hope that helps.

That's what I was thinking. He's very juke-able. Good post, tho, zjc. I agree with almost everything in it. I'm hoping we can upgrade the McRae shot to 'good' or 'very good' after he gets through the initial jitters.

Okay, I was meaning gritty as in "The guy struggles playing defense, but he tries really hard unlike a 5* player we have, so we'll give em a compliment in a way."

I'm sure he'll be better than last season. It seems like he has decent potential to be a major contributor in his career at UT.

I do think he can be a role player. My biggest knock on him was poor decisions sometimes. You can't be slower, smaller, shorter, AND make mistakes with the rock.

Agreed. I just wish TBA would cheer as loud for the rest of the team as they do for him when he does hit a shot....

Everyone cheers for the undersize, non-athletic white guy from the local town. It is what it is.
