The Section 103 Postgame Report

Broadcasters said they were checking to see how much time should be on the clock.

Correct.

nice.

hopefully they got a nice long look at that missed call, several times.

obviously, the guy on the baseline was ducking for his life, but what were the other two doing? there's no way they couldn't have seen that.

That official ducking still has no excuse. Court awareness...if you're standing out of bounds and a player lands on you...he's out of bounds as well.

NCAA officiating is a joke...

Why does he call alot of UT games? We have the misfortune of obtaining his services more than anyone it seems like. Are officials randomly assigned, or is there some sort of round-robin rotation they follow?

1. Another soul crushing home loss. This team's inability to make key plays down the stretch on their own floor has dug them a nice little hole.
2. I try to keep the material in these reports fresh, but some things need to be emphasized. Ted Valentine is a crime against basketball. Any league that employs him should be ashamed.
3. Whoever booked that Steve Max idiot to do his Simon Says idiocy at halftime should be terminated. Immediately. If that's the best "show" you can put on at halftime, just do nothing.
4. I am thoroughly confused as to why Pearl didn't use the zone more extensively. LSU looked lost against it.
5. Trent Johnson has made a world of difference for that team. They were as poised and disciplined as any team I've seen live this year.
6. Emmanuel Negedu again showed why he should be playing 20 or more minutes a night. Tennessee's run in the second half essentially ended when he was taken out of the game.
7. I feel bad for Josh Tabb. He really tries, but his ballhandling during his minutes at the point is nothing short of atrocious.
8. Marcus Thorton, Tasmin Mitchell, and Chris Johnson are a solid nucleus. Given the weakness of the West, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Tigers in contention for the overall SEC title.
9. Marissa Miller is very attractive and all, but have some dignity. The clown running the video screen acted as if she were the first attractive woman ever to set foot in TBA.
10. The season now hinges on Saturday night. A loss there and this team goes into full scale free fall.

I don't know, maybe I'm calling it a little early but I think this team is already there. I see no self confidence in this teams play. I sincerely hope I'm wrong but at this point I can't see winning more than 5 or 6 games the rest of the way.

Does this team still make the NCAA tournament? They have some quality wins, but if they can't get to 20 that is not good.

#33
If West is eligible, the point guard position won't be as bad a mess as it is now. If Wayne and Tyler return, I would hope Bruce would take the offseason and adjust his strategy to his personnel. This team would be much better served playing a zone defense in the halfcourt and scrapping the flex for a more NBA esque offense loaded with set pieces.

But is this something that we can reasonably expect to happen? I'll be the first to admit that I don't know anything about basketball, but it sure looks to me like the Pearl System doesn't change much at all regardless of who happens to be on the roster.

Great stuff - no need to check the newspaper for postgame analysis. We got what we needed in a quick blip.

6. I agree, but it wasn't long ago that it sounded like you were knocking Negedu's basketball IQ/awareness - something to the effect of him always just running towards the ball.

He still has no idea what the Hell he's doing. However, his effort and athletic ability compensate for his shortcomings in experience and feel for the game. Further, some of the minutes he took tonight would normally have been Prince's. Anything that shortens JP's time on the floor is good to me.

Not a chance in hell at the NCAA I'm sorry. Even with 20 with the SEC as it is this year I still would say we would be on the outside looking in

I gotta believe 20 gets us in. That Marquette win is going to go miles further than anyone ever thought.

Unfortunately a terrible Gonzaga team has our number.

Absolutely agree on all points 1-11.... Especially 2,6, and 11. I was amazed at the poor showing in attendance. I know we have been spoiled recently with a long home winning streak but lets not forget where we were 5 years ago.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Teddy V in the obituaries tomorrow but then again that isn't the first time I have had that thought.

to what do you attribute JP's regression this year? i know it's not like he was setting the world on fire last year, but i have to think the SEC's 6th man award meant he was doing something right. seems like this year he can't get out of his own way.

also, what was the message being sent when he sat Maze for the start of the game? if given the choice between Maze and Tabb, i'm going with Maze. perhaps it was just a wake up call?

LSU simply isn't a marquee opponent that people in Knoxville pay attention to. They're akin to USC and Auburn in basketball to the peoples' perception. I can't tell you how many people I know asked how they were this year.

He starts and gets more than 20 mpg.

I'd say it's definitely meant to be a wake up call.

I don't think he's regressed. His winning the 6th man award was an indictment of the lack of depth on SEC teams last year.

I'm not sure what Pearl was looking to accomplish by starting Tabb.

I'm optimistic by nature and have been optimistic to a fault with respect to UT basketball the last two years. That being said, I can no longer watch this team play. If I happen to be flipping through the channels one saturday and they are playing, I will keep right on flipping until I find a House marathon, a South Park episode, or something else enjoyable.

I have no problem supporting and watching a not-so-great team that at least plays like a team and maximizes its potential. I cannot, however, bear to watch another second of very talented basketball players wander around the court aimlessly with no apparent objective on either side of the ball.

So, Tyler and Wayne: if you jump to the league, best of luck. Enjoyed watching you play.

Amen. Prince is so bad he whould not even be allowed to be the water boy for North Carolina. I would rather have chilli willi on the floor than him.

Nice. I think this deserves its own thread. "Who would you rather have play than JP?"

I vote for Gus's (the deli guy gus's) sidekick. I always liked that guy.

I think two things hurt us down the stretch: Tyler Smith and Scotty Hopson. Both were trying to make plays to win the game and both had two terrible plays that cost us points. Tyler had the prayer shot in the lane and stepped out of bounds. Scotty had the ball in a 3 on 1 and couldn't pass it to a wide open man for the score and then jumped in the air with nowhere to go with the ball and turned it over. Those four wasted possessions cost us any chance of winning this game. The ball should have been in Chism's hands or at least gone down low to Negedu.

Maybe I'm just depressed from the way this season has unfolded... but give me a reason or two why the Vols will/can win on Saturday... because right now, I'm just not feeling it.

Im with you on this one, i dont see any reason to believe that we wont get blown out by the gators.. and whats worse is i just bought some tickets two days ago..

Personally I think that the reason JP was somewhat successful last year was because we had guys like JaJuan and Lofton who could spread out the defense and therefore left JP and others with an interior that wasn't anywhere close to as crowded as it is now. Now that teams are sinking in on D and letting us have the outside shot it has made it painfully obvious that JP doesn't have the skillset to defeat anyone off the dribble, nor the ability to back anyone down.

Is it me or do you guys just sit and hold your breath every time we have possesion of the ball. Our overall court awareness is terrible-from Tyler trying to drag 3 guys to the hole-to Wayne putting up the shot against Johnson. Even defensively--not Tabb's fault for giving up the critical 3 point play but the guy who is supposed to rotate over and help. Florida will beat us because they will score off of every pick and roll they run if we stay in that sorry man to man. Our kids are lazy. No savvy.

I thought the most important stretch in the game was when, down 3, Tyler Smith made 3 turnovers and bricked a contested three. In the snap of a finger, we were down 15.

I know he's the go-to guy, but if it ain't there, it ain't there.

I hope you are wrong about the free fall, but who knows. I did take some solace in the fact that Tennessee didn't quit down big in the second half last night when they easily could have. They battled back, but just didn't seem to have enough gas in the tank after doing it.
