The Section 103 Postgame Report.

That would be another solid possibility for them. He has done a nice job competing against Gonzaga, but it seems he'll never get over the hump and actually win the conference.

You're right that he may never get over the hump and win that conference. But, because of what Gonzaga has become, that isn't a fair way to judge his contributions. The talent disparity between the Zags and the rest of the conference is substantial. Bennett has done an excellent job of consistently keeping the Gaels (a) at the (near) top of an increasingly-competitive league, and (b) in the at-large bid conversation.

I agree. I personally like Marshall better, but I could see Bennett being a solid hire as well.

No, he's right. You do consistently go out of your way to directly or indirectly bash Woolridge. I'm not sure why you're attempting to deny or elude that fact.

Imagine me watching a Cavs game. Lebron skillfully takes the ball straight to the hoop in crunch-time, makes the bucket and seals the game. I respond to the play by saying: "See, that's why Lebron is better than Kobe. Kobe would have just settled for a jumpshot...and probably would have missed it too".

That would have been me taking a clear dig at Kobe. Lebron's nice play was merely the means to an end.

Lawvol took a dig at Woolridge. Pearl's nice play was a means to the end (And a tenuously connected means at that). I'm also not sure why he's attempting to deny this fact.

Doesn't matter how well you coach them if your talent is awful. Ask Jerry Wainwright.

You're making the assumption that Arkansas can't pull good talent. I disagree.

I'm not saying that Bennett is the only good guy for the job; certainly there are many many quality coaches at smaller schools that might be interested in making the jump to a school with greater resources.

The idea, though, is that a guy like Bennett who is nicely coaching up mostly mediocre players, might have success at a program like Arkansas where the potential to grab more elite talent certainly exists.

Randy Bennett's not getting top tier high school talent if he takes a BCS conference job and he knows it. If he thought he could, he'd have taken the Oregon State or Arizona State jobs when they were available to him.

You can provide alternative examples all you want to. Fortunately, the intent of my post is subjective, not objective, meaning that I know the intent of my post, not you. I was much, much more taking a dig at the people complaining about Pearl getting minutes than I was taking a dig at Woolridge.

So, that's why I'm denying it.

You must know something I don't. Does he have social anxiety syndrome, a bad case of Tourrette's, and/or a bad habit of defacating on himself when he visits recruits?

Is that why developed the aussie pipeline? Did the distance allow him to rely solely on telephonic meetings with recruits, thus leaving no chance for the targeted recruit to smell the rancid odor emanating from his britches?

I don't know the details of him not taking those BCS jobs. Could he have actually been hired? And if so, why would he not take it?

1. Another in a line of workmanlike wins. Ragged, but effective.
2. Tennessee's offense was terrifically balanced. It's hard to defend a team when everyone contributes.
3. Cameron Tatum really appears to be rounding into form. Scotty Hopson wasn't bad, either.
4. It'll get lost because of their scoring, but Tatum and Hopson did a nice job on Rotnei Clark. For Arkansas to win, he had to have a big game and they didn't let him.
5. JP Prince and Wayne Chism played like the solid seniors they have to be. If UT is going anywhere in March, those two have to drive the bus.
6. John Pelphrey is the coach at Arkansas and Nolan Richardson is working in the WNBA. Yeah, college basketball is a colorblind meritocracy.
7. Pelphrey's refusal to stand up for his team after Bruce Pearl's technical resulted in a slew of makeup calls should be grounds for termination. That's why one guy wins 20 plus games every year and the other guy is on his way to the unemployment line.
8. If you want to know why Renaldo Woolridge is getting no minutes, you needed to watch him during the last media timeout of the first half. He was more concerned with scowering the crowd and bobbing his head to the Pep Band's version of "Freeze Frame" than paying attention to the huddle.
9. Fraternity tug of war, musical chairs, and a guy shooting threes in a Scottie Pippen throwback he got at Goodwill. Halftime entertainment at its best.
10. A win Saturday should put UT comfortably in the first 20 seeds. That would give them a real chance of seeing the second weekend.

hat, I remember that you went through a good portion of the season feeling that the team's chances of a real showing in the tourney were bleak at best. Scorecards aside, what is your gut feeling now? Do you sense we are finding a level of consistency? Is there cause to get excited?

I've known Randy Bennett for around 20 years. He's not a guy whose style or personality is going to sell well to top 100 type kids and he's aware of that fact. He developed the Aussie connection because it was available and most kids there don't know the difference between John Calipari and John Cryer.

I think they need a top 20 seed to feel comfortable about making the second weekend. As to the consistency issue, let's not forget they got blown out of the gym two games ago by a so so Florida team. I can see this team reaching the round of 16, which would be a pretty good accomplishment with the current roster.

Vintage Hat. I will add though you say this in jest it really is true if he's not in touch as to what is going on in the game he should stay seated.

Props to Pearl; other than the 2nd half of the Fla. game he has really improved his game the past week and a half.

pretty cool pic. SP should probably frame it :p
