The shut down thread

doubt you could ever get anyone to agree on who is in that committee.

I wouldn't even know where to start.

if you pick politicians you get these same issues.
If you drop in people with experience or those actively working of course they are going to increase their budget.
can't really open it up to just anyone.
I don't know of any scholars who focus on this type of stuff.
Lawyers? lol.

Evidently there are such experts:
$5 billion question: How border-security experts would spend money Trump wants for a wall

You are correct. TSA went from a private entity to a public one with the stroke of a pen. There is no going back.

Thank you, President Bush, for your big government brand of "compassionate conservatism". Idiot.
Absolutely. There is private security in SFO, and the only difference you can detect is the efficiency and smaller numbers of personnel.

There's no question that both Trump and the Dems have chosen this hill to make their last stands instead of working together on comprehensive immigration reform.

Vote them all out in 2020.

With the cancelled trip and SOU speech things are getting really petty and shameful for both sides.

Maybe this has been discussed, but could people get behind allocating X billion dollars to border security, with spending being determined by what a blue ribbon, expert committee recommends. Don't know if that's permissible, but then we'd at least be letting experts--instead of partisan politicians--decide how to spend the border security money that's been allocated and neither party would be a winner or loser.
Yes.

I would say allocate the funds and let Customs & Border patrol do what they need to do to help with their jobs down there.

To be honest, is this really necessary anymore? I couldn't care less if he does it or not.
I agree its unnecessary and wouldn't be a big deal to cancel at a normal time. but now it gives Trump perfect ammo. Canceling the SOU is not nearly as bad as a government shut down, but its cheap political points for Trump in a time he is just taking hits.

The sad thing is we elected our prez, reps and senators to do just that. See where that got us?

They are just pep rallies for one side or the other - nothing of substance. However, I would like to see the Senate invite Trump to do the state of the union there - just to spite pelosi. Or he could just do it from behind his desk and remind everyone in congress that he is president (elected by a country not a little part of it) and, well, they aren't.

No one could have imagined this a month ago.

Holding government workers and services hostage for wall money is a losing proposition for Trump. The best thing he could do is neuter Colter, Limbaugh Hannity and others by letting them know that he owns his base not them. Then send a message to the Dems that if they'll concede there are areas where a wall is needed he will reopen government and begin real border security negotiations. Win Win. The speech is on for the 29th and we move on and beat each other up over the next divisive issue.
