The Star Wars 8 SPOILER thread.

It would've made for a more emotional ending imo. But I suppose you can't kill off one of your main characters with a whole movie left to go

And would have made his role in the movie actually matter because his little side adventure failed miserably.

They’ll have to bring Luke back in some form or other IMO because of Carrie Fisher’s real-world death.

She was the only major character from the original IV-VI films left alive at the end of the last Jedi, and they will have some awkward ‘splaining to do in IX as to where Leia went in the interim. Luke might need to fill the role that Leia would have filled.

Meanwhile, Rey saved the books, there’s a little kid on the casino planet who absently summons a broom to his hand, all sorts of clues about how the Resistance will need an entire new direction in tactics (only explanation for Rose’s sappy speech to Finn after knocking him out of his suicide mission.)

This should be interesting. Don’t know if I’ll like it, but interesting.

A podcast review I listened to today theorized there will be a considerable time jump of 5+ years and it will say in the opening crawl that Leia passed away from natural causes.

Woud make sense if the movie even opens with a funeral for her.

Saw The Last Jedi this weekend, and I was really disappointed. I think it was only slightly better than Revenge of the Sith. Yeah! I went there.
It felt like it belonged with that set of episodes 1-3. Too many attempts at cheap humor.
Something about it just didn't feel like a Star Wars movie to me. The Force Awakens was way better, and that was even just a straight copy of episode 4.
This one had good parts, but I just didn't love it as a whole.

Really liked the movie. A few things bothered me like all the cheesy one liners, felt they forced those way too much. Also hated the Leia crap in space, just seemed really ridiculous. Enjoyed the rest if the movie and I didn't have an issue with the force projection, Snoke being killed off, or any if the other issues some have with the movie.

Leia floating through space was definitely the dumbest part of the movie. The bad jokes were a close second.

Also, when Luke brushed that dirt off his shoulder like Jay-Z, I couldn't believe what I was watching. I was expecting him to dab next.

They pretty much spelled it out. He was really just trying to create a diversion for the Rebels to escape.

You have to admit when he first showed up your initial thought was “how F did he get there?” Then the reveal that he was just a force projection was the “Ohhhh!” moment. Now he did touch Leia and make some solid dice which could be viewed as silly. But we are talking about the force. I think it is will within the suspension of disbelief to assume with a little extra effort he could make things feel solid for a moment.

I 100% expect Luke to haunt Kylo as a force ghost.

And I’ll say it again. Another light saber duel would have been redundant. Especially if he had gone out Obi-Wan style. I think they came up with a much more original way to do it.

its been 30 years since ive seen luke wield a lightsaber, im failing to see the redundancy you claim.

My first thought was that luke pulled his xwing out of the water and flew to the planet. I actually liked the last quarter of the movie until luke dies from meditating too hard, how can anyone think thats the right way to kill off the most powerful jedi/most popular starwars character ever. Shrug.

I'll grant you the Leai part, but what was so bad about him brushing off his shoulder? The whole theater I was in cracked up when he did that, myself included.

Most of the comedy landed for me. Not all but most. Probably 65-35%. I think this is one of those cases of older fans expecting the franchise to grow up with them.

I did like Luke’s shoulder brush. There was more to it than just trying to be funny for the audience. He was trying to enrage Kylo and bring the focus on him. (And FWIW Jay-Z didn’t invent the shoulder brush off LOL).

Space Leia was my main gripe but the more I think about it the more I think it was how it was shot as opposed to what actually happened. If you are familiar with Clone Wars or Rebels then we have seen Jedi/Force users be exposed to space and survive before. They made her look like an angle or something which took me out of the movie. I’m more accepting of it now.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Would a duel have been cool visually? Sure.
Have I seen that before? Yes.

When talking to Rey, Luke even mocked the predictability of him showing up, firing up a laser sword and taking on the whole first order single handedly.

I feel like Luke going out pushing his power to the limit by essentially Jedi mind tricking 100s of people from across the galaxy was pretty damn impressive.

Leia in space was one of the dumbest movie moments I can recall.

Also the entire concept of "bombers" using gravity to drop bombs WWII style out of bay doors onto another ship... in space... with no gravity... WTF? Although to be fair just about every aspect of the Star Wars movies makes very little sense from a military perspective. If they knew that accelerating to hyperspeed through another vessel could do that much damage, why not evacuate the two smaller ships and have droids use both of them on kamikaze missions? Why wouldn't the First Order have a star destroyer or two or three jump to in front of the rebel cruiser and attach head on? Or call for reinforcements from somewhere else in the galaxy to jump over and help out?

And why didn't purple haired Laura Dern just explain the plan to Poe the first time? Would have saved a lot of trouble, prevented a mutiny, and eliminated the Finn/Rose sideplot, which would have resulted in the plan working instead of failing.

All that said, it was still really entertaining.

You have to throw space physics out the window in Star Wars. Sound and fire and the way the X-Wings and Tie Fighters zip around as if they are in an atmosphere.

And I did wonder what took Laura Dern so long to act as she watched the smaller ships get taken out.

As for why she didn’t tell Poe? Well that is the age old question in movies about why character A doesn’t just tell character B what’s going on. The simple answer is because then the movie would be over.

But for arguments sake you could say she didn’t tell him because she was the person in charge and she didn’t have to tell him squat.

I don't really mind not seeing Luke have a duel. Mark Hamill is in his 60s now and he had to work to even get into the shape we saw him. Granted he looks more agile than Alec Guiness did when he was the same age, and they can do more with special effects now, but still. Plus his force projection persona was obviously himself younger. His hair wasn't gray anymore and he dropped about 20 pounds.

Sure, but... WWII-style slow-moving bombers that somehow rely on gravity in space? That's really bad. That's past the point of suspension of belief.

I don't think you see Luke in any capacity going forward. I think the little boy at the end who definitely used force to get that broom is just the beginning of another Jedi line. I don't think the Jedi are over either.

bear with me here this is out there. I hope like hell, in an ironic twist Luke comes back as young, *****y Luke. And, wears that ***** Kylo Ren out with incessant whining and nagging about turning to the dark side. Just like the little bike from Wheelie and the Choppers.

'See Kylo!!! I told you so, I told you so!' Kylo is such a ***** compared to previous Sith lords.

To me Finn has become a pretty useless character.

Watched Rogue 1 last night, again - for the 4th time. Just a completely different movie. Top to bottom, characters, story...it captures best of both old and new.

i think someone needs to come in and just do the GA Thrawn series. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

Finn is cool character; but, like with avengers movies theres just too much going on.

Y’know... I don’t think two lightsabers clashed once in this movie. That is a first for a saga film.
