The Thread Where We Debate About Healthcare in America

One need look no further than current “social” programs (SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) to see how catastrophic socialized healthcare would be.

Hell yeah, socialism rocks! Just ask Venezuela.

Exaggerate much? In socialized medicine your care will eventually be rationed by the government. It's not all unicorns and rainbows.

It sounds really awesome in the UK right now:

“There’s no real system or order; it’s a jungle in here,” said Nancy Harper, who had accompanied her 87-year-old grandmother, who was lying down and complaining of excruciating pain in her lower back.

“It’s been more than five hours,” Ms. Harper said. “We get to the front of the queue and then someone more ill comes in and we get pushed back. It’s outrageous.”

It's not an exaggeration actually. People go into debt in the United States because of excessive healthcare costs or don't see a doctor for something that is curable.

If the govt wants single payer, I want smoking banned. Alcohol too.

Bunch of needless medical expenses that shouldn't be paid for by someone else.

Shouldn't be up to the Government. The Government shouldn't have anything to do with healthcare, unless you don't care a thing about the Constitution.

You bring up a good point. An ancillary benefit to socialized medicine is that we get to police everyone's personal habits and behavior.

I'm not advocating for it. I'm just saying those that want socialized medicine need to know that it's coming with restrictions/penalties/something for poor lifestyle choices.

You want someone else to pay for your medical treatment you better be ready for them to invade your life and tell you how to live.

Smoking causes needless expenses. Alcohol causes needless expenses. Think about all the people that want to live on Burger King, rotel, and donuts. Poor lifestyle choices that someone else will have to pay for. All preventable.

Then understand people are going to die waiting for rationed care.

Canadian Wait Times: While Politicians Dither, Patients Die

Everyone dies, the question really is, would their outcomes have been better if they were to foot the whole bill themselves under a completely private system.

Since the article mentioned chronic diseases then I doubt they would since those are the first patients insurance companies would get rid of if they had the chance. They would probably just wait to die while bankrupting their family in that case.
