The Tiger Woods saga

"Nobody gives a **** about cycling" might be one the most uninformed takes in the history of this board. Truly next level stupidity.

lol

If Lance Armstrong didn't come along, most people (in the US anyway) would think the Tour de France was a battle during WWII.

What exactly are you calling a downfall? Back injuries, surgeries, or a drunk driving charge? Plenty of athletes have been injured. Plenty of athletes have been caught with drugs or driving drunk. What is the downfall?

Are you kidding me?

He was the most dominant player in the history of the sport, well on his way to becoming the greatest golfer ever with Michael Jordan-type marketability and cultural impact, and now he's a pathetic figure who can't even play and puts balls in the water at promotional events.

His image was shattered, his body is shattered, he can't play the game of golf at a competitive level. Complete and utter collapse that probably won't be approached by anyone ever again.

Well, yes, in the USA cycling is a niche sport. But you didn't say that originally. Cycling is huge in Europe, probably second only behind football.

So to say nobody cares about it was a dumb take.

No, actually I didn't know that, because you didn't say that.

You actually think I meant that out of 7.5 billion people on the planet, literally not a single one of them has an interest in cycling?

I mean, clearly at least the people participating in the races do, right? :)

Yes, you said nodbody, and didn't qualify it with any other follow up comment. So I'm not sure how you thought I was supposed to take it other than literally.

Just read a summary of the arrest report. They found him asleep at the wheel and completely incoherent. He took a breathalyzer at the police station and blew 0.0. For his sake, I hope it truly was a one off drug interaction problem and not addiction.

with all his back and knee issues...he's a prime candidate to be addicted at this point.

And this is why I haven't said a word yet. Still have to wonder what he's doing at the time in the morning, but I can't even fathom the list of medications Tiger is on and how easy it would be to take the wrong mix. DUIs are bad, but they aren't half as bad as some here are treating them, especially if the medication thing is true.

Yep... I immediately thought of Brett Favre.

yep, and i had a co worker once, who's husband hurt his back on the job, had several surgeries, pain never went away, wound up divorced and homeless because of his addiction...sad stuff....but very easily can happen.

Unfortunately, it sounds like that is a real possibility at this point. I really hope that he hasn't developed an addiction to opioids. That would definitely solidify any discussion about who had the greatest fall from grace in sports history. And it wouldn't be close.

agreed, but as with all falls, there's redemption out there.

could go from greatest fall, to greatest comeback.

time will tell. no argument on where it is right now though.

You certainly hope that, but given how he was caught (i.e., driving a car, passed out behind the wheel in the middle of the night) it doesn't look good.

To say addiction to pain pills is an epidemic in the Army is a gross understatement

i think it's far more widespread than just in the armed forces. it's so easy to get hooked on 'em. heck, i probably know a 1/2 dozen people that have dealt with it at some point or another.

Didn't they say he didn't know where he was going or where he came from? Sounds akin to some of his latest golf rounds..

Just watched the dashcam footage of the arrest. Tiger is extremely lucky he didn't hurt himself or someone else. You can't get more messed up than he was and still be conscious. I really wonder where he was coming from. He wasn't dressed like a guy who had been out on the town. It was almost as if he rolled out of bed incoherent and just started driving around.

I've heard people on Ambien basically do something similar. Not saying that I know, but sounds like that.
