In your opinion, what is more risky?

Collapse and a new government, or Dictatorship to restore but may not get away from dictatorship?

Depends on the dictator. We already we have a bunch of mini authoritarian dictators trying to flex the tiny bit of muscles they have way past their granted powers. Either way a true collapse is more frightening in the short term imo.

Dictatorship by far, no dictator is going to willingly give up power. I think we're heading towards a one party authoritarian rule, hopefully for our decedents sake we balkanize before that happens.

Here's the problem. You are unwilling and unable to listen to any viewpoint of your own. There is no compromise. You would rather sink the whole thing rather than work together. There are versions of you on both sides of this equation, but it is the same attitude.
The issue is there are plenty of compromises to be made on several issues but a few core beliefs like constitutional law, morals, traditions and other logical and thoughtful discussions are either shouted down as “racist, homophonic, you want old people to starve and children to die” rebuttals or are based on illogical feels that have no basis in reality but “sounds good” or “protects feelings”

Then put people in office who will cut spending. Let go of your sacred cows if you're truly concerned
My sacred cow is defense spending and have no others
Actually something that is a necessary federalist requirement
Even with that this is probably only 15% of the spending

Actual defense is mandated. Not the ridiculous waste of our current military. It needs real cuts

Again, vote for people cutting spending not just the ones saying they'll spend less than the other guy

Your cow is constitutional. The managers of your cow have bloated it to grotesque and gargantuan proportions so that it cannot efficient provide its constitutional duty.

Defense spending has been stagnant and just a myth in some gargantuan growth
Has always been about 2-3% of gdp

Is there a point where defense is secured, militaries are large enough and a reduction of spending is appropriate?

I don’t know the answer to the required size
I do know they need a capitalization of hardware particularly the USAF
I have no issue in better spending of money to get more bang for buck but as stated there has been little to no growth in spending for this recapitalization for a long time. Maybe it needs to be $500B I don’t know but it is going to be a big figure regardless

Sacred cows. Not a myth when you're discussing overall spending. Between it and SS we would make a real dent

You or I do not know the answer to how much minimally is required
For that matter we could just go like 1990 Russia and just rely on nuke deterrence

Maybe not an exact figure but it's a whole lot less than currently being spent. Everything needs to be cut if we're actually serious about spending

The necessary size is hard to quantify. All of us "feel" it is either too big or not big enough. Personally, I look at the size of our military in comparison to other countries. It is over sized to me based on that comparison.

I also wonder what is the appropriate size, appropriate capitalization, or appropriate budget if our military adhered to its constitutional directive...defend America? Not defend our interests abroad. Not defend our allies. Not equip the enemies of our enemies. But legit defend America and Americans.

We should be judging our military on lethality.
