Ut basketball was a joke before Pearl came here.

No matter what the next coach does, even if he makes it to the Final Four, he did it after Pearl finally kicked open the door for UT.

Pearl got TN basketball to place it never was in its entire history before him.

He broke some rules. I think all coaches do. He just got caught.

But anyone who wants to downplay what he did for UT basketball that no other coach ever did before him is just a dumb azz.

Pearl is a huge loss. He will be missed.

Your right, Pearl will definitely be missed... We all thank him for bringing our basketball program back to relevance, but if what they are saying about another off-campus violation being committed this month, he deserves to be let go...

You have to realize we are a lot better program than we were before Pearl, and we can get either a big name coach or an up-and-comer because of our facilities and deep pockets!

This list is great. It gives the University of Pearl's supporters a "see I told you so..." if the new coach isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I, once again, pledge my support towards to University of Tennessee and not some lying, undeserving piece of trash.

Add my name to the list of redundancy.

Who is downplaying it? A lot of folks are correctly saying that he deserved to be fired. I don't see a lot of them saying he didn't make Tennessee a better program.

Wow, you really believe hoop success only happened under Pearl? By your reasoning, everything good is traced back to Ray Mears, so the only reason Pearl succeeded is Mears coached here three decades ago. I'm not downplaying what Pearl did for UT, but if the next coach takes us to a Final Four or somehow blesses us with a NC, I'm going to give him the credit, not Pearl.

About 50/50 whether ut WILL hire a better coach, but there are at least half a dozen who should be gettable and are already better coaches, and probably another dozen we don't even really know, but it's always possible we'll go find some guy from the WAC with a losing record.

Two further observations though:
a) better than Pearl is the goal, but just being better than Calamari should net us 12 conference wins every year,
b) any good floor coach (Smart, Stevens, etc...) will mean I can get back to being frustrated in the players, or miffed at the refs, rather than the current state of being constantly irked by in-game coaching decisions.

Pearl had some of the better results in UT men's bball history, but what he did was also very wrong and warranted his firing. I don't get why it's so hard for people to agree on this.

The program will take at least a momentary step back, and I'm neutral about Pearl as a person, but I wouldn't have felt one bit of good about the program keeping him.

I'll respond to yours because yours is the most idiotic.

Pearl is the first and only coach to:

Get TN to the 1# regular season ranking

The first and only coach to get TN to the Elite 8.

The first and only coach to get TN the sweet 16 back to back
The guy had to go for the rules he broke but get a clue. Pearl took Tn places NO OTHER previous coach could. He is a huge loss. The next coach is walking into a job that Pearl made popular. Before Pearl we were just a football school with a basketball team on the side.

That is disrespectful to Mears. You look at the conference record and it is nothing short of stellar considering the Big Blue Machine he was up against.

You've also got to consider that Mears was coaching at a time when only 32 teams made the NCAA tournament. In the modern era, he would've had more opportunities to compete as Pearl has for national titles.

And when I was a kid, back in the era of bell-bottoms and butterfly-collars, we were most definitely a basketball school with a bad football team.

Look at basketball under Ray Mears. HE took the program to new heights as well. Pearl has taken us to our heighest level yet, but that doesn't mean he deserves credit if the next coach takes us higher, which is what you originally posted. By that logic, then Pearl owes his success to every coach before him that took the team to higher and higher levels of success. You can't have it both ways. I would respond to the idiotic comment, but I'll choose to show more class than that. Your words speak loudly enough.

Mears would have a lot more notoriety had the tournament been expanded when he was coaching to what it is now

Some people mistakenly believe UT basketball only sprang into existence under Buzz.

As good or better?

So we either have to wait 6 years (or less ) to see if a coach can get us to the Tournament or we get a coach who has already been to the tournament 6 times. And comparatively so in regards to wins and losses.

I think I will save my kool-aide for Football.

So no at this time. But I am willing to wait and see.

You're right. Grew up with Dad telling me stories about the legendary Howard Bain.

Before the shot clock, Devoe was an absolutely solid coach. That was really all we had to look forward to as Tennessee fans at that time.

I only got to see one game at Stokely as a student (Lady Vols). T-B was in place by the time I got there. I wish the younger fans could've gotten that experience. One game in there and you would find out quickly that we were a basketball school with a good solid reputation.

Before Pearl our basketball team was the Northwestern of the SEC. The next guy is walking into a job that looks alot better than it did before Pearl came here. Pearl came into a job where the team was bounced out of the NIT in the first round in 2 of the previous 5 years didn't even make the NIT the other 3. The year before Pearl came in the team was 14-17. The following year Pearl took the team to the second round of the tourney and had a record of 22-8 in his first year and got us to 1st place in the East. The next guy better bring it. There aren't very many better coaches out there. Just coaches who didn't get caught and had a little bit more fear of the AD.
