The UT decline started when...

Probably already been said, but it's no accident that the basketball program exploded when Dickey retired too.

I think the decline happened because we didn't take a knee to end the 1st half against Notre Dame in 2004.

If Ainge doesn't hurt his shoulder, Clausen never comes in and steals snaps and confidence from Ainge and 2005 is a 10 win season. With a better season in 2005 maybe we sign Matt Stafford in 2006.

When Fulmer won his ring...he wanted one real bad and was happy with one.

The foundation of the 2001 team was recruited in winter of 1998 before Fulmer won in 1998 season. Overstreet, Henderson, etc were the foundation of the last really good Tennessee team. 2003, 2004 &2006 were pretty good teams with things falling right and 2007 was a miracle team. 2002, 2005,2008 and since have not been up to Tennessee standards.

Mike Hamilton gained control of UT athletics.

Could not agree more, my friend. Hamilton might have had fund-raising connections, but, he knew NOTHING about running our Athletic Department. Somehow, if we could have made Cutcliff our Head coach and kept Chavis as DC, the Vols would have been in great shape. Oh well, hindsight is 20 20, right? To your point, we can thank Mike Hamilton for the disaster that has become Tennessee Vol football. It's going to take some time to right this ship, but, I think CBJ is up for the task. Let's get behind him and his staff, all we can, Vol brethren.

Guys, the answer is obvious. It's when the seed was planted in David Cutcliffes heart to be a head coach. That man is determined to run a program and not be second fiddle to anybody. If Cutcliffe had been content just as Chief was, we are still playing for SEC championships to this day. How this response doesn't get a ton of likes is beyond me...lol

Colud not agree more, vsf.

This is after the "fat and lazy" coach got fired.
6-7
5-7
5-7
4-7

Because the fat, tub of goo, lazy, self serving, two bit politician, booster a$$ kissing, coach didn't recruit anybody worth a crap for the last few years of his tenure and tried to coast off of his "equity", which set the stage for the records you listed.

When Fulmer decided he could put any sort of product on the field at Neyland and remain due to his NC year

It may have not dropped to the continous low it has been the past four years but as Phil showed it would have been low two out of four years and as long as he was coaching we would not be an elite program again!

Can't agree with your logic. Every team and coach will have its ups and downs. Look at PSU and FSU all those years with JoePa and BobbyB during their coaching career they had down years some years the fans were calling for their jobs. Regardless they always turned the program around. Fulmer had some down years but remember he won the East and went to Atlanta the year before he was fired. If Fulmer was still here this team would not have had three straight 5-7 seasons.

Cutcliffe should have been given the HC job in Knoxville. I think we'd be much better off right now.

But they wouldn't be in the SECCG either. Fulmer was waaay to hands on and a control freak unlike Joe pa and Bobby B therefore he wasn't able to allow others to do their jobs so it wasn't going to turn around!

Athletic Director the past several years. Very poor decisions coming out of the department. This is just more than just the football program. Basketball, football, baseball and even lady basketball is not as competitive as it once was. Right now only softball of the major sports are competitive.

However, for me I fully put most of the blame on the top boosters. They called for Fulmers job in 2005 when the team went 5-7 and lost to Vandy for the first time in over 20 years. The next two seasons Fulmer went 19-8 with a trip to the Atlanta. After the 2007 season these boosters were back on the Fulmer and wanted him locked up long term. So our AD made a poor decision by giving him a long term contract extension with so much guaranteed. We all know what happened next season with a loss to Wyoming these same booster basically forced Fulmer out with a huge price tag. Since then the program has gone down hill. Three coaches in five years is not going to win or build any program in any conference. I sometime think that UT's success in the mid 80's through 90's spoiled the UT fans. Historically, UT has never been a strong NC contender year in and year out. Looking at a season by season record UT has had some dominate seasons followed by some average seasons. The 70's is a great example, 70-72 the team went 31-5 the next three seasons 22-12 and finished the 70's with a 16-17-1 record. I said it before and will say it again for the best of this program we should have hung on to Fulmer that would have turned it around by now.
