The UT decline started when...

It started when the administration valued butts in seats and profit more than fielding winning, competitive teams.

Yep.

The decline started when the Tennessee Vols emerged from the locker room after half time at the 2001 sec championship game

2007 - 2008 SEC signs contracts with CBS and ESPN for a combined $3.075 billion or $256 million for each school paid over the next 15 years (will be renegotiated soon for addition of A&M and MO). Parity was put on steroids as every school in the conference could pay up for some of the most talented coaches in the country. Obviously, some schools had better search committees than others.

UT's program was on the decline but the ability of other programs to compete for top coaching talent combined with bad coaching selection on UT's part hastened the decline.

Vols win 8 games in 2013 - 2014. Jones gets team back to mediocrity in the SEC (top 25 final national ranking).

BINGO!!! We've got a winner. Spurrier to SC, Meyer to Florida and Saban to Bama raised the bar in the SEC and UT stayed the course. What was good before became not good enough. Look at other SEC schools stuggling over the past few years, Florida will be 4-8 this year (why do you think CUM ran off to OSU) few years back Georgia fans wanted Richt fired, Auburn wins a National title and two years later fires that coach. The SEC has become a whole different level never seen before in college football. If your good in the SEC you get your ass kicked some Saturdays, if we played an ACC schedule we'd be..... well Duke. The problem is you need to put out the big bucks for a great coach or hope to find a diamond in the rough in the WAC or Big East. You need to be great now, not good, Fulmer was good, heck Dooley was good and you see what good gets you now.

Coach Fulmer got a little so called lazy in his recruiting the last 2 years he was here, but now looking back the year we fired him he had a top 10 class going always will wonder if we gave him one more year, how it would have turned out 8 wins now look awful damn good now, you don't just do what bama is doing in the SEC a coach like Nick comes along once in about 3o years in college football, don't get me wrong I hate the SOB, I CANT WAIT TILL HE GET OUT OF THERE BUT TILL HE DOES ITS GOING TO BE HARD ON ALL OF THE OTHER SEC SCHOOLS, that SOB is going to put up numbers that when you look at bama the BEAR wont be the first thing that comes to mind it will be that little smirking smiling SOB, I HATE THAT FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFING SOB.

GO back the last 60 years of Tennessee football there was just about one 15 year run that we were elite, there was about a 5 year period in the 60s we were elite other than that we were at best a 8 win team at best most of the time, and that 15 year run we had was when that coach that could not coach was here I bet old PHIL sets back in in rocking chair with his bag of donuts and deep down laughs his azz off every time we get beat by 40 I know he could not coach but 1 damn thing I knew a team was not going to beat us by 40 every other week remember now he cant coach so I am not taking up for him.

The decline actually started after the '87 when Jon Gruden left UT for Southeast Missouri State.

Not so sure about the last paragraph. Though he should it'll be tough, and not much proof this year that CBJ will be able to pull that off.

On that note...the 08 contracts u spoke of was the worst timing for us that's for sure. More so more final nail than start of the downturn. When the Pac-12 signed their new contract I used this same example to argue that the Pac-12 will eventually be the solid sole #2 conference in the country. They are stepping it up a lot faster than I thought, but again all the other conferences aren't doing much either.

Keeping to the thread though...i think the Simms NSD slap in the face should have been a sign of things to come.

Maybe when Fulmer was fired...I wanted him gone at the time but who knows where we'd be now with with either Tajh Boyd or Bryce Petty.

I bet every loss over he last 5 years has hurt Phil as much as it has anybody. Say what you want, but the man bleeds orange.

When the AD was removed from under the university president and placed under the UTK chancellor giving the academic side control over athletics.

This! Plus the loss of Cutcliff and the promotion of Mike Hamilton. This combination set back Tennessee Football for years. :cray:

When Kesling started. I don't know how much clearer I need to be.

Mr " check-that " has to be the WORST play-by-play guy ever at Tenn. He is as good at his job as Mike Hamilton was. I cant see why there isn't a movement to replace him- he is terrible. If Ward was a 10, Big Bob is a 5.

In hindsight, we should have given him time to get his act back together . Remember all that Coach Ocho stuff- we would kill to get 8 wins now.

John Wilkerson is an upgrade by 10fold on these basketball games in the Bahamas. I enjoyed my first radio broadcast of a UT game in at least a decade yesterday.

I completely agree ! John does great, he already has a tag line, "three for Tennessee! " then of course in the background you hear "bottom" lol ....
