The UT decline started when...

I get that slice. I just can't stand the bashing of a man who set the bar so high that fans seem to forget that.

The man is a legend. And should be treated as such. Everytime I see some one bad mouth him I want to punch them in the mouth. It's disrespectful and uncalled for.

Stating facts is not bashing. The facts are the team was built to the elite level while Majors was HC. Fulmer continued the success of Majors snd won the NC. Fulmer get credit for the wins and NC during his early years. He also get credit or blame for the downfall of the program during his years as HC. It is not disrespectful to say Fulmer let the program slide to mediocrity. To say he did not is being delusional.

Phil got lazy

Not only did Phil become complacent, but we lost the pipeline to top recruits from Georgia and South Carolina. Phil to was way to loyal to the players. We had talent on the bench because the other player was a senior.

Imo the decline started when we lost the 2001 SEC Championship game. That in itself started a major power shift in the conference.

When hammy and Phil were not sent away years earlier...maybe before hammy was hired..dickey he was not....being an assistant does not qualify you for the real thing

Hammy is the throughline between the succession of bad things that have caused this program to enter the Decade of Doom. He is the Voldemort of Tennessee football.

Well technically, the decline started in the celebration following the final whistle vs FSU

say what you may about Fulmer but This Football program would have never dropped to these Lowes If he would have stayed! Most of you hated fulmer because He was Fat, He had more love for UT football than any coach we have had in the last 50 years! (Butch jones couldn't Carry "Fat Phill's"" clipboard!)

It may have not dropped to the continous low it has been the past four years but as Phil showed it would have been low two out of four years and as long as he was coaching we would not be an elite program again!

I hear people say all the time that Tennessee got what they deserved by not thinking 8 wins was good enough under Fulmer. That is ridiculous and a complete misinterpretation.

Tennessee fans were upset with Fulmers new contract in 2008 because it had a built-in 1 year extension for winning 8 games. No one ever said 8 wins was a bad season, we were simply saying that 8 wins was not enough for an automatic extension. Personally I don't like any automatic extensions but if you are going to have it, 10 games is a more reasonable number, that indicates a great season.

So people may point to 2008 and fulmers contract extension as the beginning of the decline. That may be, but it wasn't because Tennessee fans thought 8 wins was a bad season.

You can see into the future too?

Probably not, but he most likely has a brain that he uses to think with. Just like at work, when you have a manager just coasting along, then the workplace suffers. Morale suffers and the workers (or players) don't try as hard. Been through a lot of it over my 60 years and the realization that a change needs to be made comes slowly sometimes, especially in a high profile position like coach of a major university. Phil did a lot for us but he lost his mojo.
