The Weightlifters Thread

Any tips on either reducing soreness or speeding up the recovery? I've been lifting consistently for almost 5 years, and my Friday/Saturday lift combo has my quads so sore. I am used to being sore, but I'm surprised after almost 5 years of Cfit and olympic lifting that I'm getting so sore.

Your first problem is doing crossfit.

A foam roller has done wonders on my lower back. I can't say how much is from stretching with the roller and how much is from making a conscious effort to improve my posture at work, though. Probably a little bit of both.

Crossfit is no joke. Now if you're looking to build muscle, it certainly isn't your best option, not by far. But if you're simply wanting to get in great shape, crossfit is going to get you in better overall shape than any type of weightlifting regimen.

Well this is an uneducated opinion...

I have an undergraduate in exercise science. I played collegiate football and lifted weights for 12 years.

By definition, my opinion is educated.

edit: I still lift weights, as part of crossfit (squats, clean, jerk, snatch, deadlift, bench [albeit seldom]). Point being, someone who does crossfit is going to be in better overall shape than someone who lifts weights. Stronger? No. But better shape? Absolutely.

I'm not a "crossfit junkie". I don't own a crossfit gym. Like you, before I tried crossfit, I looked down at it. That changed as soon as I tried it. I have no reason to lie or be biased in any way.

You are correct with crossfit not being the best for muscle building. I have no issues with the workouts if that is what you want to do. My issue is the idiots pushing the Paleo diet. One of the worst diets, carbs do not make you fat. Eating in excess of your BMR (maintenance calories) for an excess amount of time does.

The more I think about it, the funnier/more pathetic it is that you called my opinion "uneducated". Yeah, how Forrest Gumpish of me to think that a workout that combines lifting weights and cardio at high intensities will get one in better overall shape than lifting weights. So silly.

you guys need to recruit this poster to your thread

Yep, I was only referring to the workouts. Not the paleo stuff.

Seems like many crossfitters are battling injuries constantly.

I did not play football after my freshmen year because it was a waste of time cause I do not like to loose and my freshmen year we lost at Webb 7-6 and lost 4 or 4 more by less than 10 and Gatlinburg Pitt beat us by 25 we won 3 games. I did not think that I was big enough to play in collage at 5"11 180 but last time I spent in weight room was beginning my senior year and I was benching 385 5 times squatting 700 coaches would not allow me to try more than that but I was leg pressing 1000 pounds and I walked around the weight room with 500 pounds for 5 minuets at a time stepping up on my tip toes. and I ran a 4.6 -4.7 40 and to see 6,5 265 pound guys benching 325 and squatting 425 is pitiful to me I could reach down and grab 300 pounds and lift it as far over my head as my arms could reach. Guys like big Dan Williams impressed me though.

utvolpj, what thread was this posted in? This had me cracking up.

How can you be in better shape when you're injuring something all the time?

Serious question, not being a smartass: What makes you think you're injured all the time when doing crossfit? Do you know people who do crossfit and are often injured, or maybe you heard this somewhere?

If you're using proper technique, just as in weight-training, injuries will be few and far between. I haven't been injured so far *knock on wood* in 6 months of doing it.

Ah, your edit answered my question for the most part.

There is a greater risk of injury with crossfit compared to traditional weight lifting, no question. However, if proper technique is used, injuries will still be minimal. I certainly can't say with any amount of certainty, but I would be willing to bet that the crossfitters you're referring to who are oft injured were doing something stupid and/or not listening to their body telling them it was time to call it a day.

I'm not ignorant to crossfit. Injuries, specifically shoulders, are common.

Technique tends to go out the window when doing max reps or going for time.

Before I respond, I hope you didn't think I was insinuating that you were ignorant; I definitely wasn't meaning to.

Regarding the frequency of injuries, I respectfully disagree. In my personal experience, I certainly haven't seen (or even heard of) enough injuries to refer to it as "common". However, the few that I have seen have indeed been shoulders (& a couple of mild ankle sprains from box jumps), and I can say with a fairly high degree of certainty that they were the result of trying to use too much weight for the respective movement.

As far as your technique remark, I can't disagree with that; they DO "tend" to go out the window, but it's still fairly easy to use proper technique. If you have a good coach, they'll call you out for letting your technique slip. I specifically ask mine to.

Major disappoint! How could you not fit "snatch" into that?
