The Weightlifters Thread

Kipping pull-ups are a ****ing joke!!! On a serious note, injuries happen all the time, most of the time from bad form. They occur from normal gym goers, to powerlifters, and also crossfitters.

I agree. I meant more common, not necessarily common among all that do it.

Crossfit has some appeal. If it weren't for the ridiculous membership fee, set class times, and high rep Olympic lifting I would try it out.

You are correct with crossfit not being the best for muscle building. I have no issues with the workouts if that is what you want to do. My issue is the idiots pushing the Paleo diet. One of the worst diets, carbs do not make you fat. Eating in excess of your BMR (maintenance calories) for an excess amount of time does.

Have you tried CKD? Cutting carbs totally works. I'm trying to drop for Vegas next weekend. Was 200 lbs on Monday, and I'll probably be 187 by the time I get to Vegas. It carves me up.

Serious question, not being a smartass: What makes you think you're injured all the time when doing crossfit? Do you know people who do crossfit and are often injured, or maybe you heard this somewhere?

If you're using proper technique, just as in weight-training, injuries will be few and far between. I haven't been injured so far *knock on wood* in 6 months of doing it.

I don't know that cross fit people are injured all the time, but I can't think a lot of the motions they do are good for long term joint health.

So. That is stupid to go no carbs, sorry but I want to stay as full and strong as possible when cutting so carbs help me do that while losing about 1lb per week.

Was not trying to come at you like that. I agree about the more common ones. I also agree with the bolded part.

I don't go 0 carbs, just really minimize it. It's not stupid if it fits your goals. I don't want to have to be disciplined in my diet all the time (I'm married, not chasing tail), so I eat what I want and when I need to cut I usually can get where I want to be in 10 days or less. Even though I may lose muscle mass I look so shredded that I appear quite a bit bigger.

"Paleo" (which I've moved away from using that term) is not 0 carb. The ideology explicitly states that you eat carbs. It's more watching your source of carb and making sure you're either in the sweet spot for maintaining weight or sweet spot for a slow, healthy fat loss.

Back day yesterday:

3x8 weighted pull-ups, 35lbs
3x8 bent over db rolls, 90lbs
3x8 alternating bicep curls 35, 35, 40

Back at it for the first time in months. First legs day since probably January.

Got about 10 total reps into squatting 205lbs and couldn't do anymore.

Baby steps I guess...

Getting ready to start lifting weights after a number of years. Lots of work with dumbells will be the order of the day, along with time on the elliptical as I want to drop at least 10 lbs.

Good to hear, nerd.

If only you had time when you had free access to one of the best gyms in Knoxville.

I never really liked T-Recs. The parking situation was terrible, and all of the machines were taken, regardless of when I tried to go. It is really easy to talk yourself out of going to the gym when you know you are going to have to make a deal with a devil to find parking, and you won't be able to get a bench.

The basketball courts were nice, but half the time they had some sort of stupid event going on.

The best gym IMO, is Fort Sanders. Great facilities, easy parking, clean, and hoops.

Just did chest, shoulders, and back. Gonna be pretty sore. Tried to go easy on the weight but I probably did too much.

I play hoops at Fort Sanders. Fridays have gotten packed.

Had a productive titty day today. Set a new PR on Incline DB press. Pretty pumped about that, especially since I've been trying to cut some calories and shed some bad weight.

Great amount of energy expended today. 35 minutes on the elliptical, shot some hoops, lifted, played pickup, and walked the dog a mile and a half.

I gotta get my potassium intake up though, mega cramps.

You're best bet is probably to increase hydration. You may want a sports drink rather than just straight water to get electrolytes (including potassium and sodium).
