The "what album are you listening to now" thread...

Been listening to a lot of old school music lately...Gil Scott Herron...Bobby Womack...Harold Melvin...Al Green...just some great soul music.

dude...sounds like a bunch of self-serving crap to me...I know "hip/hop lingo"...the fact that you went on to describe it all out like you did makes me laugh.

Like I said, it probably sounds good cause the words have a nice flow to them but it has no real meaning behind it.

Hence it is not that good.

Define "real meaning".

I was refering to writers/ producers, but the same with Artist. Although if an artist record is nominated, they likely are benefiting from shows/ other avenues of $ bc of the hype of the record. But for writers/producers, a grammy nomination can take a no name to a 150K pub deal overnight.
2. Magic- most impressive lyrical performance?- Yes. Best written record- No. I see what your saying, as he's "goin hard" on the record, but I feel the corny hook overshadows the skill he shows in the verses.
3. Lupe's verse on Past my Shades is crazy-good. And I really LOVE The Kids.

Lupe's verse on Past My Shades *is* crazy good. It really grows on you. I was driving back home after helping my brother move this weekend, and had to put it on repeat a couple times. (yes, I'm still listening to this same album, among others).

The Kids is probably my favorite song on the entire album. I finally heard the Vampire Weekend song "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance" this weekend (my brother had some VM on his ipod, and I made him play it while I helped him move). It's a good song in its own right, but very different. It has a reggae sound to it. I think it's impressive (a) Bobby Ray even listens to Vampire Weekend*, and (b) how he took it and made it his own**.

My favorite verse on the entire album has to be eminem's on Airplanes pt. 2. That's classic, old-school eminem

*He actually listens to a lot of alternative. And rarely listens to rap, if you take him at his word in interviews. I do take him at his word on this point as his music is obviously heavily influenced by different genres.
**This is not Puff Daddy, ladies and gentleman. This kid has legitimate talent.***
***If you don't believe me, ask eminem:

Em spoke highly of the 20-year-old Atlanta musician, who is signed to T.I.’s Grand Hustle label. “B.o.B. is crazy,” Eminem said on Tuesday’s “106 & Park.” “That dude can rap, he can sing, he makes his own beats, he can play guitar, he can play the keyboard.”

The veteran rapper and newcomer have already hit the studio together. “We actually recently worked together a couple of months ago in Detroit and I was like, ‘Do you dance too? What don’t you do?’ I think he’s like 20 years old and the dude is like crazy talented, especially for his age.”

Yeh, he's crazy talented. His breakthrough record was actually just a feature. "Haters" came out in the summer of 08 iirc and was one of the biggest hits of the summer. He followed that with "Ill be in the sky" (crazy good) and "Mellow Fellow"

Have you listened to all his mixtapes? What's your favorite?

Gahlee. The very next line after leave u with amnesia is " I break all the rules like Evil Canevel (sp), its a spectacular show cuz my heart pumps diesel. So whatever you sayin it don't entertain my ego, I do this every day hokus pokus is my steelo" He's actually pointing out the fact that he is FAR FAR different than the stereotypical "rapper". So while he is following the st qu of claiming his greatness, (ill give you that) His words have true and real meaning. That's a big part of sets him apart. That and his style. That's what he means by "I break ALL the rules" He's not talking about breaking actual rules or laws, despite what you/some might think. Albeit soley bc of his "genre". Kids got once in a generation talent. He's destined for greatness.

Truthfully, no. Heard bits and pieces here and there. I LOVE "Ill be in the sky" Crazy hot record. Still not sure why it didn't hit bigger than it did. KidB, check out my partner's latest mainstream production; "all in one swipe" Mack Maine, ft Rick Ross and Baby of CMR. (I'm not gaga ovr the record but check the beat out)

Once in a generation talent?

Still self-serving is it not, seems he relies heavily on metaphors as well...guys use way too many metaphors these days...every other line it seems.

There is only 1 lupe, past, present, future. You want double meanings? Listen to a Lupe album start to finish. Best in the game. Lupe is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone and anyone. Kanye x3, without the ego. (Although I love Kanye too)
2. Gah. My fav records, in no order are #6 Ghost inside the machine, #1 Don't let me fall (verses are nice), #11 Fifth Dimension(prob my fav record), #7 The Kids, and #3 ..shades and both Airplans 4/12

Once in a generation talent?

It's actually not an unreasonable statement. I'm trying to think of artists in recent history who could match him on (a) amount of material, (b) quality of material, and (c) diversity of material...at age 21.

I'm coming up blank. Dude has put out nearly 200 songs. I made a "best of" cd yesterday and had to make several very regrettable omissions to get it down to 80 minutes.

I would strongly recommend ownloading and listening to the "B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray" mixtape. It's an album-quality mixtape. In fact, I would argue that it's better than his album. Plus it's free (obviously).

Here is a link to where you can download all six of the mixtapes. The link is legit; it's the one he provides on his myspace page. B.o.B's Mixtapes

I listened to the songs you two keep talking about...Magic and Past My Shades...they were good, although Lupe's verse was far superior, I think he is the once in a generation talent on that song.

He is actually one of the least self-serving rappers I've heard. "Magic" is the only song (that I can think of) where he really hypes himself. And every rapper has to have at least one song like that. I think it's a rule or something.

Here are some more representative tracks (that are also very good). Give 'em a listen:

"No Man's Land" -- YouTube - Bobby Ray - No Man's Land

"Satellite" -- YouTube - Bobby Ray - Satellite - B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray

"Camera" -- YouTube - Bobby Ray - Camera - B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray

"Generation Lost" -- YouTube - B.o.B - Generation Lost
(A little excerpt from Generation Lost:

B dot O dot B was the name.
I didn't like Bobby Ray, b/c I was ashamed

But you can call me Bobby Ray from this day forward
And I could give a damn about the fame and fortune.
)

I'll stop with those. That should be plenty for one sitting.

What do you guys think of 9th Wonder? I love his remixes.

This one in particular.

YouTube - Nas - Life's A ***** (Unofficial 9th Wonder Remix)

Lupe's verse was incredible. And I like Lupe. But Lupe is no Bobby Ray.

I actually saw them both perform about a month ago at the 930 club. Bobby Ray opened for Lupe but totally stole the show. The crowd energy was incredible and this is despite the fact that probably half the people there didn't even know who Bobby Ray was (I had to convince the girl behind me (when he was playing the song "out of time") that it was actually his material. She was like "He wrote this? Yo, I'm feeling this!").

To clarify, I'm not necessarily saying that Bobby Ray is better than Lupe as a pure rapper (reasonable people could argue both sides of that question). I'm saying he is better as an overall artist...and I don't even think it's a particularly close call.

Just listened to the first 2 songs on that list, gotta admit that I'm not impressed in the least.

You guys are making him out to be the greatest thing walking, he isn't.

His singing ability is highly overrated from what I have heard, auto-tune and pro-tools can make anyone sound good.

His beats are good, unique, I think someone said that he plays guitar, which is cool...but he isn't the first to do so and his riffs are pretty basic stuff.

From everything that I have heard, he is a good talent with a lot of potential, as far as his ability to put words together and his vocab, he takes a back seat to a number of artists.

He isn't half the rapper that Nas,Lupe,Mos,Talib,Beans are...that is just a few and just my opinion.

I wanna hear something that moves me, something that will stick with me...something that makes me think.

Listened to about 10 of his songs and have yet to have that happen.

KidB, i would say that hes got lupe in the entertainment category, with lupe winning the lyracist category. They are two od my fav's. Lupe will give you more double meanings. You can listen to a Lupe song and if your not careful, youll be left scratching your head sayin, "wtf was he talking about".They both have some crazy lyrics.
on magic after the mindfreak line-
"so come one come all, and see the show tonight; prepare to be astounded; no ghost or poltergyst (sp); u kno im no pinnochio i neva told a lie; so call me mista magic man i float on cloud nine."

He doesn't use auto-tune. In fact, he makes fun of those who do.

YouTube - B.o.B----- Auto Tune-----Spoof (Funny)

And his singing is highly overrated if you're comparing him to like Marvin Gaye or something. But if we're talking about rap artists, I think he's the cream of the crop in the voice category.

Regardless, it's cool if you're not feeling the guy. I'm not taking it personally. His songs did stick with me -- from the very first time I heard them -- but I obviously don't expect everyone to have the same reaction. Music is highly subjective, and it wouldn't be very interesting otherwise.
