The Worst Firing In Sports History Was

Did you not read my post that showed his record from 2002 to the end? And then look at UTs history by decade (which I posted)? He didn't do anything except bring it back to what it historically was. If you think UT was always as good as it was in the 90s, you have very selective memory.

The fact is in 2000 TN was one of the very elite programs in the nation. When Fulmer was fired in 2008 the program had fell to an average mid pack SEC team That is fact.
You can make any excuse you choose to make but the facts are Fulmer let the program take a huge downturn.

In regard to your post. I ask you one question.

Florida was a midpack program until Spurrier turned it into a powerhouse.
It was on top when he quit. Myers continued the winning tradition, now Muschamp is continuing the tradition.
Why hasn't Florida fell back to mediocrity?

Midpack? He finished 1st or 2nd in the division in 4 of the 7 years from 2002 to the end.

On top? It took Florida 10 years to win the big one (people fired Fulmer when he didn't win another in 10 years). Florida went to the SECCG 3 times from 2000-08, same as Tennessee. Florida finished 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 1st in the East from 2001-08. Florida had multiple 8-5 records in there, etc.

The fact is it was down from where Fulmer brought them up, but it was never down in regards to the history like you and others make it out to be.

Have a good day.

It is obvious you choose to overlook reality.

I give Fulmer praise where it is due. I give Fulmer blame when it is warranted.

The facts are Fulmer did a great job then he did a bad job.

A bad job? Again, doing what was historically what Tennessee had done year in and year out is now a "bad job" because of what Fulmer had accomplished.

Sorry that my facts and numbers and stats completely disprove your beliefs. But mine are accurate.

Jerry Jones firing Jimmy Johnson as the Dallas Cowboys coach.

The second happened in Knoxville.

Before this is merged, Happy Thanksgiving to all the good folks of VN.

The first one I agree with. As for the second, you're nuts! Just because Hamilton hired 2 lousy coaches doesn't mean Fulmer shouldn't have been fired. The Vols would still have been the doormat for GA,FLA,and 'Bama.

Tom Landry and Jimmie Johnson firings were both bad firings. Jerry jones has his hands in that organization more than Steinbrenner ever did with the Yankees.

And for the record Pearl didn't do much more than what Saban is doing in Bammie. His downfall was he lied about it. Saban has been elusive with his answers.

Go Vols......

The way Majors was fired with all the back stabbing and back room business may be the most shady. I didn't understand Auburn firing Tuberville.....kicking themselves now....

Cutcliffe fired by Ole Miss made me ask why?

Houston Nutt would have continued good things at Arkansas....

Petrino was justified but they probably should have rode the wave with him......

Which will make Bamers next probation big enough to completely shut down the ath depart.

I met Dickey like once or twice. I remember coming away from the meeting thinking, "Wow, what a prick." He didn't seem to care about people, only in how he could use them. Maybe he was a great guy, I don't know, but it's certainly not how he came across when I met him.

When Fulmer stepped in and won some games, Dickey saw his chance to take Majors down. Up until that point, they had been looking at giving Johnny an extension. Dickey could have handled things gracefully and still had Fulmer as his head coach, but, IMO, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to give JM a big screw you. Dickey had just as big an ego as Johnny and, again IMO, twice as much arrogance.

Fulmer did a great job throughout the remainder of the nineties, mostly because he knew how to suuround himself with capable coaches. He did well until the 2001 SEC CG. That loss took all the fire out of him. After that, he went on cruise control. The game passed him by as it does any great, but he tried to hold on despite it all. The '98 NC gave him a few more years than he should have had, and ultimately we paid the price.

I have respect for both Majors and Fulmer and what they did for UT football. But both had flaws and being in the spotlight normally points those flaws out.

Everything being equal, both men are part of UT's past and we should honor them, but I'm ready to look forward to the future.

In '85 when the Vols finally (after many years absent)won the SEC and went to the Sugar Bowl I, my family and friends wanted to go so badly since we had endured years of watching mediocrity...I told him, in a very nice way, that I wished that we ordinary folks who had been so supportive through the years could have access to tickets....He wrote back one of the worst tirades, telling me that he didn't find my name on season tickets lists [they were in my brother-in-law's name] and that I hadn't contributed any money to the program, blah, blah, blah....Not once did he say that he understood, but....Instead it was one of the most unprofessional things I have ever seen filled with disgusting language....I can't stand to look at the man today and I haven't forgotten his jumping ship to coach at Florida either.....

If everything was the same as it was in the 90 for Fulmer, then he might be good to go.

But the newer SEC coaches were eating his lunch and giving him a wedgie.

Meyer, Richt, Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Tuberville had his number.

He did great before, but the only coach still around from that era is Spurrier, who had Fulmer's number anyway.

He was also trying to "pickle" himself with alcohol.

Not to mention lining up 5'10 185 Terry Daniels at fullback and keep running him up the middle until we "got it right" and made it work ... which he never did.

Bama dismissing Curry was pretty stupid, but he was a better man than that bunch of tree-killers deserved to have.

The Majors firing was pathetic.

1989-91 Majors teams were 29-6-2 with 2 SEC Championships
He had his heart surgery in 1992., the year he was fire . He was accredited with a 5-3 record. Fulmer was given credit for a 3-0 record in 1992.

Majors record last 4 years 34- 9 -2 with 2 SEC Championships

Fulmer record from 2005-2008 , his last 4 years was 29-21 with zero conferences championships.

34-9-2 with 2 SEC Titles > 29-21 with 0 Sec Titles.
