Things I'm happy about today

Oh yeah, forgot this part. The lady supervisor we know is a pretty big hot shot, really high up. She texted Tiffany and told her that she's actually head of the whole department I'll be in, over my supervisor. She knows about the surgery, and told her not to worry about me using my days off whenever we need to, that it's no problem, she's got it covered. I know when I had my in person interview with the other 4 people, they had asked me how I found out about the job. When I told them her name, they said wow, you got the right person pulling for you.

Sorry (not much) for the long post. Happy is hard to confine.

So back in early winter, I posted that I had kinda back-doored my way into the Asheville Symphony Chorus. I had my official audition in January and was officially accepted. At the end of the audition, after being told that I was in, I then asked what I needed to work on to be competitive for the much-smaller Chamber Chorus, and got the feedback that I needed.

(Always, always, always ask what you need to learn/do to be better!)

So Tuesday, I received an email that began like this:

<VolNExile> -

Hello! When you auditioned for the Symphony Chorus, you indicated an interest in singing in the Chamber Chorus.

One of the altos in that ensemble let me know recently that she is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. This will likely jeopardize her availability to sing with the ensemble for its performances in June.

I know this is crazy-late, but are you still interested? I would need you to sing A1. The music is challenging (but wonderful!). The performances are…

So I now have an invaluable 7-week audition to officially join an ensemble that I would never, ever, ever have thought that I’d be eligible for. Life sometimes works this way! Keep asking, people! Fingers crossed for the real audition in the fall…

Holy shizznit, this music is SO gorgeous. There’s chant (plainsong), there’s the triptych below, there’s three traditional American hymns. Here’s one of the pieces (I have one week to learn nine songs 😳). — No one has to listen to the whole thing, lol. Anyway, I’m happy.

Excellent Exile... makes my Korean BBQ input look pale.

Ok... I traveled to Korea several times a year for a period of 12 years. First go at Korean BBQ messed me up... I ate too much of the spicy kimchi. But with time I started to focus on the beef on the grill. Some of the local sales guys knew the good place for BBQ in Seoul, and they ignored the prices... I became spoiled and soon found that the BBQ was the go to meal after to long day of meetings. We always started with a few Cass beers, some soju (a lot). And the BBQ kept coming. Soooo good! And I learned there are BBQ joints that are pretty bad in Seoul as well... a new Korean sales guy thought he was going to save a bunch of money by taking me to one of these places. After he asked me my opinion, I was able to correct his attitude and we ate great BBQ next time out. Garlic is king in Seoul... hop in a cab and you will smell the pungent order of garlic. But, grilled garlic is sooo good as well!

I hate, hate, hate kimchi after having to smell it on school buses when I lived in Hawaii 🤢, but Korean BBQ has always sounded wonderful! How hot is it (I know it’s fiery) compared to US BBQ, chili, etc.?
