Things I'm happy about today

I am Happy and thankful that I found a nail that I dropped in my gravel driveway, because I
looked for it Friday night and it got dark on me, so I got up before work and found it. I sure
did not want to run over it because I just had run over something a few weeks ago and had
to fix my tire.

@VolNExile
did you get roth book?
I did! He loves it. Said it was one of his best birthday presents ever. It’s a good one (per him) to pick up, read a bit, set it down, reflect on it, and pick it up again. He said it’s really helping him sort through his thoughts about Roth’s writings, also growing up and living as a decidedly secular Jew in the US (he was born in 1950.)

He took it to Denver and alternated it with some Scan noir when he needed to come up for air. Tell your son that, at least for this one very non-academic fiction reader, Jørn Lier Horst is currently his only serious rival. 🤪

went to my first soccer game in about 35 years to see the meramec mustangs kindergarten team battle the forsyth school squad, and learned that I am directionally challenged as these youngsters. Neither team allowed to use a goalie, but forsyth had a forward who may be college material. (Bet they recruited the kid)

My daughter coached older grandson’s 4/5 team, and she had one of those. I now know to watch for players with names ending in O. (Or A, if it’s a girl.) Bonus points for older siblings who play.

Sad times when youth sports is plagued with parents behaving badly. Offenders should be arrested for the crimes they've committed, processed, taken to jail, and require bail be posted for release. If an adult relative or family members NOT guilty of a criminal act is not available to take in the children, then call upon children's services. Yep. Having dad, mom, or both commit simple assault or other crimes at your game is traumatic. Being processed by Children's Services while dad and or mom are in custody for violating the law is icing on the trauma cake. Place the blame where it belongs - on the parents.

Good Lord, what kind of youth sports do you attend?

I threw parents out for verbally crapping on coaches, refs, and most especially kids. I preceded games by telling both sets of parents that if they got all worked up and just couldn’t control themselves, there was a vacant pitch (field) and spare balls, and they could go play a game themselves if they felt they were so knowledgeable. “Go burn off some energy, and let your kids play.” (I got plenty worked up as a parent; I knew what it was like)

I will not bother searching or linking the stories of adult violence at youth sports games. It's either increasing in frequency, or it's increasingly reported due to smart phones and socmed. Parents assaulting each other, game officials, and even participating minors - it's out there. I don't remember a single incident of it when I was a kid, but I'm old as dirt.

I had batteries and water bottles thrown at me in high school by parents.

Increasingly reported. It's been bad since I was a kid.

When I was playing YMCA youth soccer in the 70s, the best team my age divisions year in/out was the Toros sponsored by Ali Babas Waterbeds. Two of Babas’ boys played on the team and together with a she-sasquatch they were the teams’ stars. One fine season, I was randomly placed on their squad. Probably, it was an effort to handicap them. I hardly ever got to play, but I was a champion!

The level of involvement boggles my mind. When I was a kid, I don’t think my mom’s station wagon even came to a complete stop when she shoved me out to go practice/play whatever sport it was that day. Then she’d come back and pick me up afterwards. Enough other parents treated kids’ sports that way that I never felt slighted or unloved. Juxtapose that with a flag football game I went to for one of my nephews a few years ago where parking was worse than Titans gameday and people were tailgating with tents and grills for 10-year old flag football.
