Things I'm happy about today

My dogwoods are brilliant red. The neighbor’s poplar is turning gold. The maples are in between. The oaks seem to go from green to brown and shed leaves whatever color they may be. The water oaks will have leaves clinging and falling into first quarter of 2023.

We've already moved on to dark gold, russet, and deep red.

This has been the loveliest October I can remember for many, many years and in many locations. (Obviously this is not true for those hit by Ian.) :-(
I've seen a lot of people say that, like it is the brightest year they've seen in the mountains. I think it's definitely been beautiful, but not the best we've personally seen.

I think if we had timed it perfectly and picked the right elevation, it may have been, but when we went to Linville two weekends ago, you could drive one mile on the parkway with color, to the next mile having everything changed and gone. We drove it two weekends in a row in the same area last year and it hadn't changed over so quickly compared to this year.

This is from 2020. One of my favorite days - we went hiking and couldn't believe the color and made a full day out of it.

I think leaves on a lot of the trees (around here) in the higher elevations were stripped early by winds from the remnants of Ian. Down here in town (~2200"), more leaves hung on, and the cold nights and warm days really amped up our street trees.

Maybe they know that their days are numbered. :(
