Things I'm happy about today

Want to avoid student loan debt? Get good grades. Get a job. Go to a college you can afford. Being 1/2 Native American doesn't hurt either.

As an undergrad, I had the GI bill and worked 20hrs a week. As a postgrad, I traded stocks and was able to pay half the cost. The other half we were able to pay via my wife's job. No debt at graduation either time. And a very "thank you to my wife" for her support.

Bartended all four years of college plus internships here.

Also, if there is a local community college in your area, go there for the first couple years and get a bunch of credits out of the way. Then transfer to where you want to get your major.

I don't disagree with what you are saying here but the average cost of attendance for a student living on campus at a public 4-year in-state $102,828 over 4 years. Not everyone can make a 32 on their ACT and working at TCBY on the weekend isn't going to cover that.

I get that. And for those people there are, at least, two options:
1) Don't go to public 4-year instate college that costs more than you can afford to pay as you go.
2) Take a student loan to go to the school of YOUR choice AND pay it back as per the terms of the loan YOU applied for.

3) Different state schools have different fees and different levels for merit scholarships. My HS Senior could commute to Univ. of Memphis and between lottery and merit scholarships, pay nothing. If he went to UTK, he would only qualify for the lottery scholarship.

I thought the feds strong-armed every state to raise the drinking age to 21 back in the 80s, but I'm probably wrong.

Good onya for working your way thru!
Louisiana, iiremberc, was the last hold out. I may be wrong.
