Thompson Boling Arena at Food City Center

It’s coming everywhere. I think that Danny made a good deal. A lot of schools will earn zero dollars over the next couple of years as they debate whether to participate and negotiate with businesses. 10 years is much better than 20. Who knows if the going rate might be $10 or $20 million/year soon? Mean while, the huge naming rights for Neyland are still on the table.

Down the road nobody will remember which schools were early to naming rights. Kroger, Yum!, and others already initiated the trend. It’s going to be everywhere in 5-10 years. UT will be in a much better bargaining position once the number of available sports venues is cut down. Right now Food City could have taken their $20 million to many other places instead.

On today's VQ podcast, Brent Hubbs thinks that Neyland Stadium is off the table for corporation naming rights.

Low rent move. You're never going to see "Duke's Mayonnaise Cameron Indoor Stadium" or the "Allen Fieldhouse at the Hy-Vee Plaza". Kentucky football is a trashy, low-rent program, so yeah, they will stomach Kroger Field. Good programs shouldn't pull moves like this.

Except that USC football did…and Ohio State basketball… and Texas baseball…and Texas A&M baseball

Kentucky sold their arena’s naming rights years ago. We’re not above it if they aren’t.
Lmao wait…Kentucky sold naming rights to Rupp Arena and the official name is “Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center” now? And they signed a 14 year deal for $1.5m/year? Seriously??

So “Thompson Boling Arena at Food City Center” and a 10 year deal for $2m/year is actually A. Not unheard of for college basketball power programs and B. Would appear to be financially another market value/a very good deal?

No way that is true!

Naming rights on Cassell Coliseum are $500,000/year for 10 years ending in 2025. Carilion Clinic.

I think that Danny (and Food City) did the right thing. Collect a couple million dollars as things develop. UT will be in a good spot to renegotiate as the 20 year deal winds down. No competing team fan bases are going to be mad at Food City for sponsoring UT (FC already has been on a smaller scale).

Is it a 10 or 20 year deal?

I find it odd all those bashing and saying it’s low rent and blue bloods wouldn’t do this etc etc are all crickets when it comes to the Rupp info
Central bank is far less embarrassing than a dumpy grocery store.

I’ve also never heard Rupp referred to that or seen ugly signage on the exterior. They do have that misplaced logo on the court but not sure the reasoning - something about having to get a new floor to fix. Their “center” consists of a hotel + convention center + Rupp.

(And for the record I was not one of the posters claiming a blue blood would never do this but you seemed desperate for a reply on the matter).

It's just part of the continuing commercialization and professionalization of college athletics, especially for football and basketball.

The next thing to ask is, When will we see Food City or other corporate patches on Vol uniforms? Big universities are in a greedy state of mind,
and not paying much attention to the //college// part of college athletics. So corporate logos on uniforms could be coming.

The University of Kentucky doesn't own Rupp Arena, though. They are the main tenant, but I'd guess they only get a small portion (if any at all) of the funds from that naming rights deal. LFUCG owns Rupp Arena and the complex it sits amongst.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew the Central Bank Center consisted of multiple buildings including the Lexington Convention Center so that makes more sense.

Yeah, it also includes the Opera House, the Hyatt Regency, and Triangle Park. Probably some others I'm forgetting. But just like the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, it is not on campus and it isn't owned by the university. Similar to U. of Memphis and the FedEx Forum.

I don’t think central bank is any better than Food City, is what it is at that point, not like it’s Vagisil or something like that.

You’re right, nobody calls it that, the same way nobody will call it Thompson-Boling Arena at The Food City Center, that’s the point everyone is still gonna call it TBA. And the pictures I saw are much like the renderings of TBA, smaller print that includes the corporate name.

UK I’m certain had to be on board with that deal for it to happen, 99% of people don’t know what either way and don’t differentiate it when it comes to having sold the naming rights.

Not convinced of that. There’s a reason UK gets **** for Kroger field while no one bats an eye at automotive/bank/tech/etc sponsors.

Also just realized the O’Dome, more well known than TBA imo, sold its naming rights to ExacTech for about $600k/year. Is that one also off campus?

Upon further investigation, UK negotiated the naming rights for the entire complex in their newest contract signed in 2018. However, when they sold the naming rights to Central Bank, they had to pay $750k to LFUCG. Additionally, they pay LFUCG $1.9 million/yr to use the facility. They also pay $4.75 million/yr for the media rights.

So, they pay $6.65 million to lease the facility, and the $1.35 million for naming rights after the $750k penalty leaves them with a $4.3 million lease liability, annually, to use Rupp Arena.

The ODome being more well-known than TBA is extremely debatable. Despite a more recent facelift, it's even less attractive than TBA, both inside and out, to be honest. It looks like a stormtroopers helmet. It is on campus, and a more appropriate comparison for our current discussion. It has been called Exactech Arena since 2016.

Yep, I didn't see that originally either.

USC had a deal with United Airlines to include them in front of the LA Memorial Coliseum. There was some resistance, so they re-negotiated to name the field after United. Blue blood.

I believe that stadium is owned by Los Angeles and USC signed a 99 year lease.

Can we go back to BTO's oblique suggestion that Calipari's team play at Vagisil Arena?
