Thompson Boling Arena at Food City Center

Lastly, you don't need to waste time trying to convince me of the positives. I'm not going to withhold my support of Tennessee athletics due to slapping Food City decals on everything at TBA. It really isn't a big deal. My issue is more with the idea that everything is for sale these days. Nothing is sacred anymore and Neyland Stadium is next. I won't stop watching when it does. I just won't like it, and I can understand why others don't, as well.
fair enough…I won’t say “I like it” in the sense that it makes me happy or I was rooting for it or anything else, I just don’t dislike it, which many seem to absolutely hate it. I get it, I get that’s it’s college sports, I get that this is where things are going with collegiate athletics, and in a race to get more and more money, doing this and getting arguably the best deal that’s currently had in the nation here in Knoxville isn’t something I’m going to get too bent out of shape about, or upset about. But to each their own.

Didn't he already keep Vitello on campus? And he hired Heupel and has extended him, as well.

Baseball coaches often hang around for decades.

He better have extended Heupel.

The bar is pretty low since those before Danny were such a clown show. How much failure money did we end up paying to ****** head coaches? I don’t know which was dumber. Paying Monte a million dollar retention bonus for hanging around for about a week after Lane ran off or Fulmer gifting Kevin Steele a similar amount for filling as the interim head coach for a couple of weeks.

Yeah, the bar is certainly set low. I'm just saying he's done two of the things you've asked for, already and he's just in year 3. Basketball hire is probably coming the next 2-3 years.

Nearly doubling Heupel’s salary and adding a year to a one sided contract isn’t that big of a deal. Keeping him happy and locked down 5 years from now would be. I would say that extending Vitello is the most impressive thing that he’s done so far.

I don’t think that will happen. But Louisville, a much more prestigious basketball school, is named the Yum! Center. It just is what it is.

I think part of a name change being good or bad simply comes down to the actual name of the sponsor (duh I guess). Kroger Field is dumb as hell. Food City is dumb. Marvel Stadium, Oracle Park, Progressive Field, etc actually sound good.

One thing about athletic directors. We really don’t know what it’s like to have great ones doing THAT job.

The entire history is:
Neyland (1936-1941, 1946-1962)
Barnhill (1941-1945)
Wyatt (1962-1963)
Woodruff (1963-1985)
Dickey (1985-2002)
Hamilton (2003-2011)
Joan Cronan (interim)(2011)
Hart (2011-2017)
Currie (9 months in 2017)
Fulmer (2017-2021)
White (2021-present)

6 of them were mostly the Chairmen of the Board for football. One bean counter that couldn't count very well. A Bammer. An unstable human being. Now Danny White.

Joan Cronan was maybe the best one, but was quickly moved to the side.

I’m fairly confident in him hiring a good basketball coach, moreso than I was with football. No offense to Barnes but I would hope he would have zero to do with picking his replacement.
On the other hand, consider that the new coach will inherit a roster designed to play Barnes ball. I most certainly would want his voice of experience evaluating possible candidates on whether our players are compatible with each coach's philosophy.

In the VolCalls interview with White he talked about TBA as a solid, well-designed shell that could use an exterior that (my words) elevates the level of architectural style. (I presume that means a facade.)

Ten years and $20m dollars... does that sound like a good way to pay for that exterior upgrade?

IMO they mostly adapted to Barnes Ball rather than coming in with his style. I don’t think that that will be an issue. Going the other way would be difficult. Taking players that played at a fast pace and putting offense way ahead of defense and making them adapt to the highly disciplined, defense first style wouldn’t be an easy adjustment.

The University Of Tennessee at Chattanooga built an arena. They named it The Roundhouse. We watched basketball games there, went to concerts there, and enjoy all kinds of events at The Roundhouse. Fantastic memories.

Then one day, someone named McKenzie offered a bunch of money to put his name on it. And now it is called McKenzie Arena.

I can understand the benefit of Mr McKenzie's donation to the university, and what it made available to students and the school. But I can also be sad at the loss of place I knew called The Roundhouse.

Money makes the world go round. It doesn't mean you always enjoy the ride.

Whine if you want ... but UTAD needs to Take The Money. Woulda been cooler to be Sea Ray Arena etc. But, 20M is 20M! Neyland will be next. It's business folks.

Regional companies make a lot of sense when you consider the hate for other programs. I’m going to boycott any company that puts their name on Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and ESPECIALLY Sanford Stadium.

Yep, the Roundhouse! Watched Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Dr.J, Darryl Dawkins, Andrew Toney, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Dale Ellis, Vern Fleming, the great Buzz Peterson and Moc legends like Willie White and Gerald Wilkins there. Not to mention Barry Manilow, Cyndi Lauper, Carmen, the B52s, a tractor pull, and DC Talk, and a more. I had a PE/Scuba diving night class there as a student in the 80s. Used to sneak up the stairways and into the concerts when classes ended around 7PM. Even preached the Gospel later outside the arena on year. Lotsa memories there.

It was a great name that paid homage to the railroad history of Chattanooga and the name was awesome. I remember when the McKenzies donated millions ($10M?) and they changed the name. Bummer. But you have to take that kind of money!

Used to play a lot of volleyball over in Big Mac too back in the day Volleygirl. 🙂

I was too until I learned that Ben Hill Griffin was going to become Levis' Stadium in honor of jorts! Just fits ... pun intended.

Well he would simply be offering a current staffer if he had any influence. Not worth the risk.

Something that massive will take a lot more than that. And a big chunk of that will go to the new scoreboard and other inside renovations mentioned.

If we want a good solution for the exterior we probably have to take some of that money plus a big chunk of change from the budget/fundraising.
