Thompson Boling Arena at Food City Center

Also I think building a TBA size/quality arena today would be closer to triple or quadruple that based on what our baseball stadium renovations cost.

Apparently the recent renovations at Rupp were 241 million (not just arena costs iirc).
$20M to add a suffix to the arena name. You'll have a hard time convincing me it's a bad deal.

Well they didn’t rename it “Food City Arena.” It is “TBA at Food City Center” according to UT’s tweet. So it’ll just be called TBA like it has been. I’m not even clear what’s been renamed, it’s not like the floor is named TBA and the rest Food City whatever. The whole arena is apparently still “Thompson-Boling Arena”, just “at” Food City Center. So what exactly does Food City Center refer to? Odd
It's to try and have it both ways...getting the money from the sponsorship deal while not removing the TBA name. Because you're right - I have no idea what the "Food City Center" is.

Towing the company line. Nothing more, nothing less. Not sure what you expected. It is not like Barnes is a loose cannon with a sordid history of controversial remarks that paint his boss in a bad light.
Yes, he's selling what he was told to sell, but $2 million/year is "transformational"?

Come on.

“Transformational” may not be referring to the dollar figure and more about the idea of opening up new revenue streams for the university. Not sure.

4x Oakland university’s arena is the standard?

As for Kentucky, football stadiums aren’t utilized year round though. And they cut that deal about 6-7 years ago now so that would be much higher.
If all you can provide for evidence is a smaller school making 4x less and football schools also making less it’s hard to say it was some horrible deal imo. If there’s numbers that suggest otherwise I’m all for them, but from what I see that’s public knowledge it looks like a solid deal.

Making less in 2017*

Also Oakland seats 7k and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an event at their arena on tv.

The deal may not be horrible in terms of the market for naming rights. It seems low and probably is.

But that’s not my primary issue with it. I don’t think $2 mill/year is worth adding a bad grocery store name to the arena. We are crossing into territory where we won’t ever come back from. If we are going to cross that line I would’ve hoped it would’ve been a significant amount and not a drop in the bucket. It’s tacky.

Maybe they can’t. I drove by both Neyland and TBA everyday for my job before I moved for 8 months and it literally made me shake my head every time I see TBA. It’s so ugly on the outside. Maybe @Thunder Good-Oil or one of the old timers can tell me what they were thinking.

Doug Dickey had an aluminum siding business on the side.

Louisville football signed a $2m/year contract just a few months ago for their football stadium, you don’t think their football program generates more money than Tennessee basketball?

It’s not just about how much revenue their football program generates. How many events does TBA hold that aren’t UT basketball games?

But again - my primary point isn’t we should be getting more. We shouldn’t be doing this unless we are flat broke or it’s “transformational” money.

This is absolutely pathetic and now Tennessee fans basically have no ground to stand on when making fun of Kroger Field. $20 million over 10 years doesn’t even sound that big. You couldn’t get $2 million a year from any other company??? Gross.
$2m/yr is among the highest average per year deal that I can find and that is including football stadiums, which we all know is where the money is. This is the new era, Neyland Stadium will get it too, as will Lindsay Nelson…maybe folks should’ve had some foresight and not made fun of Kentucky for this, or just not have gave AF, folks still call Heinz Field by that name, people will still call it TBA, and Neyland and Lindsay Nelson when that day comes, who cares.

But football sees more viewers on tv, and that is part of the equation. Neyland Stadium at 100k in attendance and with several million on tv get more views in 6/7 games than basketball arenas altogether.

It really doesn't change the name, just adds on. If it mitigates the costs for significant upgrades for the benefit of the fan and player, then it seems like the deal is fine to me.

$2m/year is among the highest deal out there, football or basketball, that means we got high end of the market. We also didn’t sign a 20 year deal like many have, so if market goes up it won’t be long before we can sign a new contract. I highly doubt you’ve donated $20m to UT, it’s a big number and they can do things with it, maybe you think it should be more but there’s nothing out there that suggests that’s the case.

Or maybe (for the third or fourth time now) I’m suggesting we don’t need to sell our naming rights for $2 million (or 3 or 4) a year, lol.

Why did UT fans make fun of Kroger Field anyways? 98% of pro stadiums have sponsorship for stadiums.

I believe “We can’t make fun of Kentucky’s stadium name now” for $20M is more than a fair deal.

Also Danny is a top tier financier and negotiator for athletic departments. I’m sure he got the best deal.

Because no one wants their facility named after dumpy grocery stores.
