Thoughts After Reading The Letter...

I'm puzzled how a hiring that took the program from 5 wins to a roster that won an SEC title and went to the NCAA Tournament 4 straight years was a bad one.

I just didn't want the debate with O'Neil that would inevitably arise. Only reason I didn't mention him.

Please follow the posts before you comment on something. The post i responded to made a dig at bruce coachin hc offense. I responded tha they made it to elite 8 doin so. Supposedly he won by scrapping his controlled chaos march which they didnt run last year. The comment was about hc offense nothing else. And yes bruce is good at coachin defense so it wasnt taken as a dig. I again point out u dont get to elite 8 only playin good defense and rebounding

Then how do you get to the Elite 8? And the discussion wasn't strictly to HC O. It was directed to the fact we won in spite of the lack of an offense.

Don't be stupid.

It absolutely was about hc offense go back and look. Exactly how am i being stupid? U dont consistently score on the 70s and 80s with poor offense

So ray Mears and Don Devoe weren't good hires?

Don't let the fact that Dickey could care less about bball and didn't care who ran the program (and hired accordingly) mean that UT can't make a good hire. Let it focus instead on the man making the hires.

Devoe was not a good hire. I think Mears was a good hire. We have just started to build a tradition of going to
the dance every year and it will go with Pearl's departure. We have been televised around thirty games a year the last few years and I don't want to lose that.

Tennessee has not been able to hire quality coaches in the past. Just look at our history. I think we lucked up in
getting Pearl. Another coach will take five to six years just to get us back to par if they can even do it. I hate
that we are in this situation, but, I just don't see us gaining anything by getting rid of Pearl.

How can people continue to make a statement such as this?

62-59 san diego
83-68 ohio
76-73 ohio state
70-69 msu

Don't discount the fact having guys like JP Prince to break down a defense. Other than the 83 spot on ohio, where's the offensive outburst you are claiming?

With lackadaisical D and little rebounding we get run out of the tourney quick with the controlled chaos bull.

If memory serves correct his best year was 21 or 22 wins.

6 tournament appearances in 11 years (including his first 5).

By my count has 6 of our 16 NCAA tournament wins.

Last UT coach to win the SEC Tournament.

Won 20 games 6 times. Had 2 losing records. In 11 seasons.

After consistently hearing about how putrid UT bball was before Pearl and how terrible it will be after he was gone, I'd say he was a damn good hire.

Controlled chaos worked very well when Smith and Lofton were running it. I'm not saying we should go back to it. But, it worked well with that personnel.

Do you think that a lot of that TV exposure was due to the increase in number of networks and SEC contracts with same, rather than UT having 'the best coach in the world'?

We did not run that at all last year. And where did i claim offensive outburst? Just said our halfcourt offense wasnt bad last year

Because we had a couple guys who could break down a D.

You claimed games averaged in the 70's and 80's as a stat to show how well off we were.

A lot of it was out of necessity though. We had no shot of playing half court defense for 40 minutes with that group.

Guy on VQ just posted a quote from the AP.

CHATTANOOGA ? The University of Tennessee trustees’ vice chairman says the board is taking allegations about athletic department violations “very seriously.”

Vice chairman Jim Murphy during a meeting Friday in Chattanooga told members they can direct any questions to UT-Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek.

In the only public mention of the matter at the meeting, Murphy said the board hopes the process is as swift and painless as possible, although he added it’s “not going to be painless.”
